I really dont collect to much currency anymore but thought I would pick up a $500 and and first is the $500.
Nice pick up! I have two 1934's but in a $10 and $20 denomination. That would really be nice to have.... Jealous! LOL.
Always thought about picking up the larger denominations, but never pulled the trigger. If inflation keeps going the way that it has been, then they probably start making these bills again! You are aware that text and multiple photos can be put into one post.... right? Not a big deal, but this obsession that you have with numbers of posts is a strange one!
I know we haven't produced these large bills for a very long time.... They haven't been demonetized have they? If that note was carried to the bank they would still have to deposit $500.00 into your account wouldn't they?
I know that as of the mid-90s, they had not been demonetized. My Dad did construction and was depositing a down-payment check for a room addition. When he told the teller to put the money in checking, she said something like "Are you sure, some old guy just deposited these". It was a bunch of thousand dollar bills. My Dad thought they were neat, got a couple of them, showed them to his friends for a while, and then took them back to the bank and deposited them!
Well, it is a lot of money to keep tied up if you just "think it's neat". A shame he didn't sell them to a dealer or a collector, though. I hope someone else got them before the bank sent them back for destruction.
True. My family wasn't "dirt poor" while I was growing up (always had a roof and food), but "lower middle class" would probably have overstated our financial situation. There's no way that he could have afforded to stow away a couple of grand for collecting purposes back then, so my implied criticism of the decision is tongue in cheek. Makes for a good story though
