HI Everyone just a note I thought might be interesting. At the ANA show I dropped off my Danco album of Barber Half Dollars (77 coins) and my Walking Liberty Half Dollars album (65) coins for grading. AT 79 thought this might make it a little easier for disposition of my coins when i'am gone. Got my results back not as good as I had hoped for. My Walking Liberty's came back with 6 cleaned coins about 1 in 10 my Barber Half's came back with 25 cleaned about 1 in 3. I am not a dealer just a old collector. Not sure how I could miss that many Barber Half's and do about average in Walking Liberty. More practice and learning I guess Thanks

how bout some pics of the ones that came back cleaned? Some other members can point out exactly why they are and how to look out for it in the future

Did you get high grades on the others? Nice stuff or G-VG coins?

I would hate to pay that grading bill.

Your experience points out why those who collect moderately priced and pricier raw coins should submit at least a few to a reputable TPG. You may crack them out when you get them back if you are an antislabber. You may not agree with the assigned grades either. But you will have a pretty good idea of what the market thinks of your coins, so neither you nor your heirs will be surprised in the future.

HI everyone just spent some time last night and this morning looking at my cleaned coins and I think I might have found some of the problem. A number of my coins have horizontal lines across the face I looked in another dansco album of barber halfs and found the same thing on some of the coins. Since these albums are very old and the coins have been in and out of the album many many times I think it might be possible that if the coin was not seated all the way to the bottom of the cut out maybe sliding the plastic insert in and out so many times might have caused the lines and that could lead someone to think the coin was cleaned Thanks

When I place coins in a Dansco it is always from the reverse side. I leave the plastic obverse slide alone.
So any scratches get on the back of the coin.
I submitted a coin once to a TPG that had die polish lines on it. They called it cleaned due to marks that looked like scratches. It was really from the polished die.

Did you have someone take a look at the coins before submitting to make sure doing so was worthwhile?

No not really at 79 not a lot of people I know into collecting coins and I have been doing it for 50 years or more so I should know but sometimes I get in a hurry. Took both my walking liberty and barber half albums with me when I went to the ANA show in Anaheim to look at some upgrades and walked by the PCGS table and made a split decision to just give them my albums and get the coins into slab's and now I am realizing not the best move on my part. I thought that would make things easier for the wife when I am gone. Thanks for your reply
