Is nobody out there concerned that using your actual name could provide enough information to track you down and potentially make you a target for theft or robbery?
Of course. But like many (most??) coins are in a bank vault, not at my residence. I suppose they could burgle my books. Good luck. They are heavy. Not to mention there is always a sizable amount of 'protection' around.
Interesting comments, Ken! (I realize they are from another commentor). I'm a beginner and I'm not ready for a forum that is too scholarly. I got hooked on CT because the commentors sound like regular folks like myself. There is warmth, humor, and some good natured ragging from a lot of very experienced collectors having some fun. I'm learning more here than I feel I would on a more strictly moderated forum.

I have used my name since University back in the 70's. Started as a masking of my name for anomynity. I explained in the @Bing Thread for my Birthday. (Thank you for that, that thread truly touched me!). I really enjoy CoinTalk for it's light and relaxing atmosphere, but also for true help, knowledge, tips, pointers, and coin ideas. Other Forums are great for what they are as to giving more in-depth information, etc. All have complementary offerings for me. As for Ignoring: I really enjoy good humor and banter. I take my hobby as for what it is: a wonderful hobby for me. I am an end-consumer of coins, and collect them as a means to escape from my businesses. I am not a scholor, numismatist, etc. I enjoy history and enjoy collecting coins and artifacts as placemarkers. However, I do not care for abusive behavior, I do not care for belittling, I do not care for chest-pounding about how much they know, nor do I care for condenscending behavior. I do not like folks who cannot truly state what they mean, rather hide behind a cascade of rude emoticons that are communicating much different messages than what is actually STATED. I only ignore when a person gets ridiculously out of hand, and they are just wasting life. I am here to learn, have a wonderful time, share freindships, share my collection, and on a limited basis share my life. Usually, an Ignore is for a short period as I hope individuals rethink how they interact and have respectful behavior. Some that I have ignored have truly been trolls that the Moderators have banned.
I think JA, Sallent & Mikey Zee summed it up about right. CT is a casual, social, laid back kind of forum. I've less than a year collecting ancients & learn a lot from you all. I like to mosey around the other forums on CT, I've collected other coins most of my life. I've made some friends as well as conections (dealer wise) here. I like Forum as a learning or to compare coins & other information. I also like the auction. I use my (my wifes) cats name. He's actually a pretty cool cat. There are a few here who know my real name or atleast first name & last initial.
Years ago someone pilfered our mail and figured out I was a coin collector. Sure enough, they broke into our apartment--hopeful visions of early retirement from a life of petty crime dancing in their head--and proceeded to completely clean out a jar of modern small change gathered in various travels... while completely ignoring the few ancient coins that hadn't yet made it to the vault.
I'm not. My collection is in a safe deposit box. The only coins in my home are recent arrivals and ones I'm researching. And to help prevent anything like what happened to Volodya, all coins are mailed to my PO box.
I'm ok with shoot first ask questions later. I'm also pretty sure (atleast hopeful) my whole neighborhood knows that fact.
That's always been one of my main concerns. Like others here, I store my coins in a bank vault, but the crooks wouldn't know that until after tearing my house apart. Like David, I use a P.O. box for ALL coin related mail, including catalogues, coin shipments, society mailings etc to avoid Volodya's unfortunate incident. I've decided to keep my nom de plume. I probably leave enough clues in my posts that someone could figure out where I live, even with my "John Smith" name.
Well, I guess I could let my guard down and use my real name ... Mr. Stephen XVI ... but I am a bit worried that somebody might hop into their get-away van and travel 7 hours north of Winnipeg to steal my 600 pound gun safe (which contains about as much value as my neighbor's fully loaded Ford truck) ... actually everybody else in my neighborhood keeps all of their hobbies in their front yards!! (snow mobiles, boats, ATV's) ... I doubt I could even convince most of my neighbors that my coins are real!! (and they'd laugh and say "well, ya can't ride 'em, what good are they?!")
