Hello everyone, I am happy to share my finds from Saturday's 5 hour metal detecting hunt in a park in upper Manhattan NYC. About a month ago I detected 1 Silver Washington in a new spot I tried. I was really tired at that moment so I decided to come back another day. Well I'm glad that I did! I detected 12 Silver US Coins.. My new record for Silver coin finds in 1 day! 3 of them made a Trifecta of Quarters 14 Wheat Cents.. most were corroded The one on the left was stuck to the Standing Liberty Quarter and it is dated early teens. Cub Scout Clasp Everything Joey with the goods!
That's one helluva day! Seems you found some virgin land in upper Manhattan. Any chance the park was in Inwood?
Thanks. It wasn't Inwood Park. I was there about 2 months ago and didn't really find anything good. It was Morning Side Park which is North of Central Park.
Congratulations Paddy!! What a haul. I bet you were so excited you could barely get in the door and tell your wife. Sure glad you went back and cleaned that park. I wonder how much the park has changed over the years. I mean it’s been 62 years since 90% silver was last in general circulation before it was hoarded.
Heck of a time you had there @paddyman98 Well worth going back there for another try. You know the old saying, "if at first you don´t succeed, try, try again". Well done
Thanks! I’m glad you did. Twelve silvers in a day, huh? That totally smokes my standing record of five. (Which happened as a result of me digging an old pocket spill, all from the same hole- 2 Mercs and 3 silver Roosies and one nickel.) Interesting corrosion deposits on the back of the SLQ- was there any trace left of the copper or bronze object that it lay buried with? Looks like an old pinback from a brooch or something. Just two Barber quarters in the same day would have blown my mind. I only dug three ever in all my detecting days. Coingratulations! What’s your cumulative silver count (all time) up to, now?
It was a Copper Wheat Cent that was stuck to the reverse. It took a bit of prying off. It's a bit hard to clean it but I will try later on. I have a Dremel
Dremel! NOOOO! I hope you were kidding. I’d try the hot peroxide trick. Heat household first aid hydrogen peroxide solution in the microwave until it’s almost- but not quite- boiling. Then plop plop fizz fizz, just like the old Alka-Seltzer ads.
Weird how the Wheatie left that little crossbar across the green circle. I’ve had pocket spills in close proximity that produced green circles like that, but never with the crossbar. Looks like one of those “circle slash” prohibition signs.
