Bought this for $38. Think the toning is hiding something??

    What do you think?

  3. A bit of an overpay as the coin is polished - you can tell from the dark color and the slick surfaces. Value would be closer to $10.

The toning isn't hiding anything. This coin is polished, or, at least, very harshly cleaned. You can get a legit UNC for around that.

IMO that's not even attractive toning. sorry for your loss!

You overpaid by about six times.

You paid $38. Value: $6.2898 if it weighs right. Two weeks ago it was $6.94. Silver has tanked recently.

I disagree, personally. All old coins hold historical value. This is not a chunk of silver. It tells the story of Columbus and highlights the Columbian Expo. Even tho it is cleaned he can still get about double melt (market value). The complete lines on the sails indicate it is UNC or very very close. So to me that makes it worth more than melt. IMO.

Good plan. You could probably get an actual AU/BU slider for around $25, so even without the cleaning/polishing issues, you kinda overpaid.

I would put it at $20-$25. The toning is a bit odd. Almost looks like it was hit with a gold wash at some point.

Was the coin misrepresented by the seller in any way or fashion? Other than stating "gorgeous rainbow toning", they provided more than enough information for an educated decision to be made regarding the coin's overall condition and value. Therefore, since you made your bed, you may want to consider lying in it, even if only as an inexpensive lesson. The provided photos are the seller's, and this thread started the same day as the listing ended via BIN.

No disrespect intended, but people really need to stop blindly "buying" first and asking questions only after doing so, using return privileges or ebay's buyer coddling ridiculousness as a crutch. It's one thing to purchase a coin and once in-hand realize/decide it's not quite what was expected, but something else altogether to "buy" on the blind, then ask the forum for advice, and force someone else to shoulder the mess when/if it doesn't work out in their favor.

Books, that's the whole point of having a return policy. You get something in hand, realize you don't like it, or it doesn't meet your criteria, or something - and so you return it. I don't see anything wrong with returning it. The seller almost certainly knows that this is a POS, and is probably hoping he scored a sucker - but the seller isn't really out anything if DV returns it.

If it were misrepresented, he would return it with a SNAD.

In its poor condition, I would say about $13-$15. I bought one in much better condition for $25 last year.

Uncirculated means uncirculated. The minute it touches someone's hands and gets a rubbing/cleaning it's no longer uncirculated and it is misrepresented.

Yes, and if you re-read my post you'll realize that's exactly what I said. I was even sure to clarify regarding the exact situation given in your post, but this isn't what we have here.

Have you looked at the listing in question? First, it ended yesterday, meaning the OP doesn't have the coin in hand, hasn't seen it with his own eyes, and came here for advice only AFTER agreeing to purchase. This situation is the polar opposite of the one we both described when returns are completely reasonable.
