You should be mindful that pensions were established for people who needed them, and not for those who don't. That you are able to benefit from the same programs as those who are more needy is fortuitous. I wouldn't begrudge that fact . . . it's better than the alternative. While I don't like the way income is redistributed - and it's likely to get worse - Uncle Sam could have taken much more of your earnings than he did.

eBay can be frustrating but you can't blame somebody for trying to get the best deal they can. Its a game for some people. Not everybody who bids on something wants it so desperately that they have to have it.
On top of that, people may also be thinking if they have to resell on eBay down the road. They're going to have to take a 12% haircut too. If you ever have to resell you basically had to have purchased at an extremely good deal to have a chance to break even on eBay. Usually impossible.

Im with what another poster said. Quality items are bid up and are difficult to win. I'm finding old US coppers are going for well above their list price posted in last year's redbook.
Coin collectors are a small slice of society. People who are into foreigns, ancients. etc.... are a thin slice of the original small slice. Id accept this fact before getting mad at people.

Well, since Onofrio wondered, I'll tell him. My collections are quite eclectic also. Many of my world coins, perhaps 2/3 or more, were purchased in bulk lots in non-online in-person auction settings. The single purchases I have made in world coins are overwhelmingly high end condition coins, irrespective of price. My three most recent world coins purchases were at 1) @coinzip 's Gettysburg Battlefield show where I picked up a mint state 1918 British half crown, and a mint state 1928 Swedish 2 kroner; 2) an eBay auction from our own Lost Dutchman Rare Coins where I scored a BU 1952 500 Markka Helsinki Olympic and the sweetest li'l 1887 Queen Victoria British Shilling I over saw; and 3) a 1893 British penny in NGC MS63RB from the Stacks/Bowers/Pontiero sale at the NYINC convention in January.

Those are my standards when I'm buying world coins singly.

Yah, good luck with that. IRA's never were intended to be a tax DODGE, only a tax SHIFT. At 70-1/2 the federal government wants back some of the taxes they let you DEFER in years past. You ain't the first guy to hit age 70.5, and won't be the last.

You mean a tax deferral. Being a CPA I know all about it. I wrote to my Congressman and Senators because it is unfair to working schleps like myself to work all their lives to save and want to pass on a measly few hundred thousand thousand dollars to their heirs while the filthy rich get away with paying any taxes at all because their lobbyists have succeeded in getting legislation passed that favors the aforementioned filthy rich.

I congratulate you. My best and most expensive coins have been passed on to my children. I'm selling stuff that they wouldn't appreciate. Among the coins I've kept for them or have already given them are my old Ben Franklin Proof Sets, my first Kennedy Proof Sets up until LBJ carried out Gresham's Law, all of my Proof Gold and Silver from the US Mint, the 1976 Bicentennial Silver, Gold, and First Day Cover commemorative medals, all of my Gold $50.00 and one hundred dollar gold and Platinum from the US Mint, a Platinum commemorative 100 Franc piece from the French Mint celebrating the Statue of Liberty, all of my Gold Canadian Coins including the low mintage (200) 5 gold ounce Maple Leaf Forever and the War of 1812 Boston Harbor Battle between the USS Chesapeake and the HMS Shannon. I could go on and on but won't. You just gave me an idea to post on Facebook about the extortion perpetrated by the US Gov't against us who have reached 70 1/2.

I feel terrible that that's all you've been able to hand down to your children, and that you're being forced to draw on your third pension against your will, while millions your age don't have to draw on even their first pension (because they don't have any).

Thank heavens you're still able to rely on the US Gov't to redistribute my current Social Security taxes to you. Perhaps that can help compensate a bit for my "cheapskate" habits on eBay.

I have been paying payroll and income taxes since I was 13. A dollar was actually worth a dollar at that time and gasoline was 35 cents a gallon. The Social Security pension that I'm getting is my money! When my father died in 1975 the stinking government gave him a lousy $250.00 in spite of all the money that he put into SS and the fact that he was a WW II vet. edited

And there is nothing in the law that keeps you, once you have paid taxes on those minimum withdrawals, from setting it aside or investing it for your heirs if you wish.

You don't have the least iota of what you're talking about. I planned my life out to be in the position I'm in today. I wouldn't work for any amount of money. Work is the result of original sin that Adam and Eve committed in the Garden of Paradise after which God told Adam that he would earn his living by the sweat edited, oh pardon me, brow.

Yes, your Social Security pension is your money. It's supposed to be so I don't see where the outrage is.

The SS system is messed up because it has been used to pay "disability" benefits to those who have never worked, will never work and never had the foggiest intention of working.

No problem. I was just trying to educate the young'uns on what SS is all about. How appropriate, SS, just like Nazi Germany.
