I have been collecting and reading about coins since the mid sixties off and on. Yet in so many areas of the hobby I still feel novice. There is so much to learn in this hobby. Lou
Lou: I agree, I still depend upon a friend or two to tell me about cleaned coins. Some are extremely deceptive-- to me. We live, we learn.
Just for the record, Chester 1st, then Festus. Ken Curtis won the role of Gunsmoke deputy sheriff Festus Haggen in 1964. Although he was cast to fill the void left by the departing actor Dennis Weaver, Curtis' character proved extremely popular. As a result, he remained with the show for more than 10 years, until its cancellation in 1975.
I've been collecting coins for 20+ years, and studying numismatics more in depth the past five or so years. I think even if I do this (and I plan to) for the rest of my life, I'll never be an expert, but I'll have a lot of fun. It's forums like this that let us, with similar intrests, mingle, share our knowledge, and interact, that create not single experts in the field, but a vast library of combined information and expertise. Not to mention, it beats mowing the lawn on hot summer days! Guy~ (expert on useless stuff nobody wants)
No Dan I am not, and that is not false modesty that is the truth. While I sincerely thank you for the comment and am flattered by it - it is simply not true. There are many others right here on this forum who know 10 times what I do about a given subject. My knowledge base is a general one, although I do specialize in some subjects. Nobody can be an expert on everything - there is simply too much to know, it's not possible. But I do have a very good library and work on increasing it always. So I am able to look a lot of things up; and I was blessed with a good memory - most of the time But none of these things constitute being an expert. I've met a few experts and know one when I see one. Trust me - I'm not
I'm no expert, but neither am I a novice. I have been in numismatics for over 40 years, worked at a coin shop for 6 years, and have over 200 U.S. exonumia specific references in my library. I have identified approximately 50 unlisted varieties of tokens in a couple of fairly well researched areas. Most coin collectors don't have much knowledge of exonumia (I was oblivious for decades), so it probably doesn't require a high level of knowledge to appear to be an expert .
