That's not true at all, the reason that something is polished before it is plated is to improve the finish. Just so you can compare, this is what a genuine uncoated cent looks like. Notice how it has a very flat and dull appearance. Nothing about it looks chrome plated.

I too have a 2002 silver colored 0enny, with no proof or evidence of alteration, yet it stands in mostly clear, if not slightly too small, shape.
