Hidden amongst an eBay sellers listing of 95% damaged coins. This is a 2018 shield cent struck on a defective planchet. Getting more technical we can see either a fissure or ragged clip. Blakesley effect above god affecting it and rim. The terms r very similar.
Still no comments! I am interested in what an error expert who sees lots of planchet flaws, like Fred Weinberg, has to say. I am personally more of a variety person, so I am not sure what to think.
Due to the beveled nature of the defect, I'm going to call this a "Rolling Induced Fissure". Link to a description here: https://www.error-ref.com/rolling-induced-fissures/ You definitely also appear to have plating issues as well. https://www.error-ref.com/cracked-and-peeling plating/
Yea that’s what I know noticed as well the plating issue. Hmm okay I didn’t come with that on my search thanks for the comment.
Definitely a defective planchet – and the nice Blakesley effect opposite it is proof that it occurred before the coin was struck (obviously) You don’t see too many of these anymore, so this is a scarce date for any type of clip or planchet defect.
