Thanks Dave. I snagged that '40-S Merc. on eBay. It's currently in an older ANACS holder. I'm considering doing a GTG on it, but we shall see.
A very nice 53-S Franklin... probably 64 or 65, but not FBL. For this date, lines need to be full and crisp all the way across the bell with no flat spots or breaks of any kind. This one is 90% full and very common. Love the Kennedy...it,s a type 1 Trans. Rev.
Nice stuff! The 53-S Franklin is definitely above average, even if it probably won't get a FBL designation. I would try it, though. The only coin I don't care for is the half dime. Looks like it's been dipped and AT'ed. Having sharp, blue spots on a pale pinkish background with part of the reverse being white scares me off.
Oh I know.. But that would be the fun of it. There is a place in Portland that is called "Silver Dollar Pizza" though. I used to frequent it for lunch when I worked near it.
Thanks for the info Paddy. I tried to find info on it when I got home, but could not find anything using a Google search. Would you say it's MS or AU? I know it's hard to say using images. [/QUOTE] Justin looks as have been cleaned at one time, but yes I say Au. Retoned . But even at that wouldn't have stop me from pulling the trigger on that one. Good date variety and great color. The Mercury is also a very nice coin ,I like its eye appeal . All the coins you purchased have nice eye appeal , had they crossed my path they would of been mine for sure. I have to warn you half dimes can become habit forming. And a fun series to collect . The Cap Bust are pricy but again so much fun to hunt down. But you truly scored some nice coins at the show congrats .
Thanks for the info Paddy. It was a fun show. I changed my buying strategy up a bit this time. I normally hunt for varieties, but after my lackluster Great Collections auctions recently, I refocused and looked for gems in the rough, under graded and great looking coins.
Justin I just remembered that I have another book on H-10 ' s . Your's is the RPD-001 cross reference : V-3b, Breen 3099 description : repunched date 1860/1860 Repunched 1 south seen below the base. Repunched 8 north seen above the left lower and upper loops. Repunched 6 north seen above the right middle . Repunched 0 north seen above the top and bottom . Xf. 60. Au 90. MS 63 300.
Portland's a big hipster foodie town for sure. I still like my Who Song & Larry's on the river though. Or Stanich's on Fremont for a great burger
That is a fact. Portland's saying is "Keep Portland Weird", while here in Vancouver it's "Keep Vancouver Normal".
Not just low income tax, but 0 income tax. The only income tax I have to pay is Federal. I work in the state of Oregon, so I'm taxed there. Plus most of what I buy is in Oregon, so no Sales Tax. It's also nice that coin shops in Washington are exempt on sales tax with the exception of supplies. So coins and bullion have no sales tax.
I can't convince myself that the toning on your half dime is natural. I see a spotty pattern that is usually indicative of an added liquid chemical toning accelerant. The reverse has some white brilliance with what looks like hairlines, so maybe cleaned and retoned artificially? It just doesn't look right... I approve of all of your other purchases, though.
I was thinking that myself but not on what caused the unusual toning. I agree that the reverse is what most puts up the red flag for me.
