Hey guys. I never expected to start one of these threads myself but here I am. I got one of these aluminum. Storage boxes for slabs. Its nice but either the foam or the glue material to hold the foam down has somewhat of a strong odor when the box is sealed. I've left it open to try to mitigate this. I dont know for sure it is glue. It may be the foam itself. Id really hope the company wouldn't put out a case like this using a material that could be harmful for long term storage but you cant assume anything. Anybody else have one of these?
Do you know what kind of material the foam is made from? If you can smell it, I wouldn't trust it for long term storage. I believe these types of cases are intended for short term storage - carrying a collection to a dealer, or for a dealer to carry to a show. There is a difference between long term and short term storage.
As previously mentioned, if it smells, it outgasses, and should NOT be trusted for long term storage.
I also have one of these but without any particular smell. I will recheck it next time I access it. Just contact the company that manufactured it and ask about the particulars. I like the product very much. I would think if your slabs are air tight and are not the gems of your collection, you are probably ok but your concern is valid.
