The 200 or so surviving World War II veterans are getting their due today as well they should. The people who won World War II deserve the thanks of the world. Still we should remember the man who took on the great responsibility of launching the D-day Invasion. The decision was not easy, especially since the weather was not cooperating, Here are two modern commemorative coins that celebrated Dwight Eisenhower's military career. This commemorative silver dollar was issued in 1990. It recalls his duel roles as a military and civilian leader. This second piece was issued as part of the Five Star Generals set. Ike is pictures with General Omar Bradley. Finally here is a political button that was issued during the 1952 presidential campaign. It reminded the voters of Eisenhower's military service.
Fellow that shows up at our car cruises from time to time has a 1959 Cadillac. Car is a mile long and wings so big that looks like it could take off and fly…… Anyway, he has a sticker on that giant chrome bumper that reads “I Like Ike”……
My local newspaper did something really cool. They did a reprint of the front page of that famous day. These were the headlines. Germans Say Allied Paratroops And Ground Forces Land on French Coast; No Confirmation Given By Eisenhower London Is Silent On All Reports Of Berlin Radio LONDON President Ask Italians to Aid In Peace Plans WASHINGTON Allies Hammer Fleeing Enemy ROME
Here is an example of a 1959 Cadillac convertible It would be a bit inconsistent to have an "I like Ike" bumper sticker on a 1959 car unless the owner was a huge Eisenhower fan. Eisenhower ran in 1952 and 1956. He was the first president to be effected by the term limit which is an amendment to the Constitution. Here are a couple of buttons. Eisenhower had a serious heart attack in 1956 and there was some doubt as to whether or not he would run. Given his great popularity, it is hard to believe today that one would need to "draft Ike," but here it is.
I also remember my late father-in-law on D-day. He was in the Coast Guard and piloted a landing boat on that day. Survived the entire Europe war uninjured. On VE day, he was in San Francisco, about to ship out to the Pacific war, when he was cut by a broken beer bottle. No, he wasn’t drunk or fighting; it was a simple accident. He was treated in a local hospital by a nurse whom he later married. He was one of the nicest people I’ve ever known. Cal
It would be perfectly consistent to have an "I Like Ike" bumper sticker on a 1959 model year vehicle. President and General Dwight David Eisenhower was our President throughout 1959, serving from January 20, 1953-January 20, 1961.
