Yes.. I was out fishing with my boy when he called and my attention was occupied at the time. But he said the edge was filed and that there were blobs at the date and some of the letters that indicated a casting to him.
This thread scared me to death! I thought we called a genuine coin fake. That's because we just had a similar 1804 in the office with the die break an I couldn't recall if it was the coin Randy had. Randy's coin is 100% counterfeit and I'm no longer in suspense. The image above shows casting bubbles inside the letter. IMO, the coin is still worth at least $40 so it is not a total loss.
Certainly worth "at least $40" to me for an in-hand review!!! I would not challenge Skip's review but would love to see it myself. I have a couple of cast half cents in my collection that may well have been contemporary.
I'll bid $40.50. LOL, I'm out. If you sell it, I think Jack should have first shot for the Darkside Collection.
Well…. I was going to send you a private message but I don’t see that option on your profile thing…… I’m not so interested in cash really. How bout I send it to you and surprise me back with some other low value coin?
You will have it! I plan to weigh it on my scale for correlation and then have it XRF scanned at my LCS.
I've been using my wife's vegetable/meat scale. It doesn't do but one decimal point after the zero but it's accurate and proven. Still haven't encountered a light Morgan.
Received today; weight showed as 5.7. Glassing it shows no obvious issues on the edge; I will get it under a microscope for closer inspection later. It does show some iridescence, which would be consistent with cleaning/ polishing. I plan to take it to my LCS in the morning for an XRF scan.
OK, back from my LCS; coin "rings" like a genuine one and scans 94% copper. Coin has been polished on all 3 sides, especially the reverse but heavy on the edge as well, softening a lot of details. Working on images; cool little project! I definitely understand the TPG's "Questionable authenticity" check on the submission.
What a cool coin! Spent some more time under a glass and microscope trying to find an indication of a casting port with no luck.
