Arrived today Hadrian Denarius. HADRIANVS AVG COS III P P, laureate, and bearded right / SALVS AVG, Salus standing left sacrificing from patera over flaming altar, holding sceptre. 18mm, 3.30gr RIC 268, RSC 1329.
I like Hadrian's bearded portraits. It was a factor in my decision to buy this denarius which is also a SALVS reverse. RIC II, Part 3 (second edition) 2047 17 mm. 3.3 gr.
Well this is a little weird. I just got this one today from LCS. It says: Hadrian AR Denarius, 128 AD, COS III, 3 GRAMS, RSC 379a, and sear 3474. Obviously, that's all I know about it. Going to try and research more. Hope they had it all done correctly. Well I typed this last night and forgot to hit "post", lol. So I'm posting it a day late.
Nice example @kountryken ! I'm not sure about "Sear 3474", but "RSC 379a" seems correct. However, the year of issue is 126-127 AD (not 128 AD). The RIC attribution is RIC II.3 855. See here for more examples and more info.: https://numismatics.org/ocre/id/ric.2_3(2).hdn.855
Thank you so much. I'm here to learn and you could write what I know about ancients on the head of a straight pin and have room left over for... well, you get the idea, lol. (Gotta be a country boy, kin to one, work with one, or watched shows like the Beverly Hillbillies, etc. to understand this) I truly appreciate the knowledge of the members of CT, and your willingness to share. I've learned a lot, but still have a long way to go. But couldn't, and wouldn't, ask for a better platform or people to learn from. Thanks again.
Touché @Barry Murphy ! Very good point. I'm a little embarrassed to say I did not realize that fact. (However, Hadrian is outside my main collecting theme.) But having said that, my response to your legitimate query is illustrated below: A little wear on a Hadrian portrait's facial hair makes him look like the guy on the left below. And some die-makers plumped-up Hadrian's beard more than others. Similarly, some men have beards... and some men have BEARDS! I sought a Hadrian example with a BEARD more in keeping with the guy on the right below. (And BTW, both "guys" below are the same "guy".)
