I was pondering what I would make my 1,000 post on CT. I'm still waiting on some inbound coins to be delivered. I'm sure the weather on the east coast may slow mail from the other side of the Atlantic. I did score a nice coin that's been on my buy list for probably close to a year (since before I got bit by the ancient bug), in JA''s auction this week. With that I thought to share a coin I got a couple of weeks ago via JA via JBGOOD. I'm glad I pulled the trigger on this one because I later found out another person was looking at it. Had I waited I would've either lost out or be forced to bid against someone I've grown to consider a friend. Likely my favorite emperor. Definitely one I have several types of coins from. Diocletian, Tet 284-305 AD 20mm, 8.1g, 12h Alexandria 286/7 Obv: Laureate, draped, cuirassed bust right Rev: Eagle standing facing, head right, wreath in beak. Wings open, between two standards. LA * in upper field Curtiss 1974, Milne 4891 JA''s photo (I've misplaced my files). If anyone can tell me where to find the symbols I'd appreciate it. Feel free to post what you have.
Congrats! I take it you're enjoying your time on the Dark Side . In honour of your 1000th post, here's the coin that has accession number 1000 on my collection spreadsheet. HADRIAN AR Denarius. 3.23g, 20.9mm, Rome mint, AD 119-122. RIC 82 var. (bust type); BM 164 note. O: IMP CAESAR TRAIAN HADRIANVS AVG, laureate, draped, cuirassed bust right, balteus (sword belt) strap over shoulder and across chest. R: P M TR P COS III, Concordia seated left, holding patera.
Well I don't have 1,000 coins or a Diocletian tetradrachm but I do have a Diocletian: Dioclectian, AD 284-305 AE, Follis, 9.8g, 28mm; 1h; Aquelia mint Obv.: IMP DIOCLETIANVS PF AVG; laureate head right Rev.: SACR MONET AVGG CAESS NOSTR; crescent in left field; VI in right field; Moneata holding scales and cornucopiae In Ex.: AQP This was my second ancient coin purchase.
Congrats Smojo a great coin for your 1000th, like Jwt708 I have a Dioclectian and my third coin purchase. Minted 293-294 AD Siscia, 2.5 gm, RIC V/11 263.
The date on your coin is Ldelta or year four. JA's listing had the date right and included the current best book on the subject by Emmett. It is a nice looking reverse. Diocletian, AD 284-305 Potin tetradrachm, 20mm, 8.1g, 12h; Alexandria, AD 286/7 Obv.: A K Γ OYA ΔIOKΛHTIANOC CEB, laureate, draped, cuirassed bust right. Rev.: Eagle standing facing, head right, wreath in beak, wings open, between two vexilla L Δ / * in upper field. Reference: Emmett 4039, Curtis 1974; Milne 4891. From the Collection of JBGood
Congrats on your milestone post, Smojo! This place really gets to be a habit after a while, doesn't it? Here's my favorite so far of the many Egyptian Diocletians I've accumulated: EGYPT, Alexandria. Diocletian year 11 (?), CE 294/5 tetradrachm, 19 mm, 7.6 gm Obv: ΔIOKΛHTIANOCCEB; laureate head right Rev: Draped bust of Selene right, crescent before; L IA behind Ref: Emmett 4080.11, R5 The date looks odd, more like L IE rather than L IA. It can't be L IE (year 15) because production of tetradrachms in Alexandria ended in 297. Per Emmett, this reverse was only issued year 11. Could it be and unpublished L IB, with the right side of the B missing? Possibly, but it's probably just a somewhat blundered A.
Great 1000th Post, and great Diocletian TET @Smojo ! Looks great. I only have ONE DIOCLETIAN and that is unusual for such a pivotal Emperor. (AND, it is not a tet.) RI Diocletian 284-305 CE AE Folles VOT XX But, since I do not focus on the Empire period of Roman History, "I got it to GOT it!"
Diocletian Coin: Bronze Follis IMP DIOCLETIANVS P AVG - laureate, cuirassed bust right. GENIO POPV-LI ROMANI - Genius standing left, modius on head, naked except for chlamys over left shoulder, holding patera and cornucopiae. B star across fields. Exergue: Mint: Trier (AD 298-299) Wt./Size/Axis: 9.35g / 28mm / -
Smojo => congrats on your 1000th post ... Otacilia Severa. Augusta, Æ Sestertius AD 244-249 Secular Games issue., 4th officina. 9th emission of Philip I, AD 248 Rome mint Diameter: 28 mm Weight: 15.99 grams Obverse: Draped bust right, wearing stephane Reverse: Hippopotamus standing right Reference: RIC IV 200a (Philip I); Banti 13 Other:12h … Good VF, dark brown patina, with some red Continuing the tradition of Claudius and Antoninus Pius before him, the celebration of the Secular Games at the end of every century since the founding of Rome culminated during the reign of Philip I, as the city celebrated her 1,000th anniversary in AD 248. The legends on these issues almost exclusively read SAECVLARES AVGG, and feature a similar iconography from previous games, such as the she-wolf suckling the twins, the various wild beasts paraded through the amphitheater, and a cippus inscribed for the preservation of the memory of these events ... her hubby as well ... Philip-I (Phil the Arab) 248 BC
Ummm, I think you're talking about "the date"? L ("half a T"), Δ ("triangle") ... hmmm, but I don't know what those two other symbols are either ... TIF will know Oh wait => the eagle has a wreath in its mouth (that's probably the "horse shoe" that you're talking about, eh?) ... and I think that the final symbol is merely a "star"?
Yeah Doug I don't or at least can't find the symbols on my tablet so I just left the legend out. I was also going from memory and o viously left Emmitt off
Oh, okay. As Doug already posted, here's the legend for your coin. It's often very hard to distinguish the Greek characters on these later Alexandrian tetradrachms. In theory your coin's obverse legend is: AKΓOVAΔIOKΛHTIANOCCEB A K Γ OVA ΔIOKΛHTIANOC CEB AVTOKPATΩP = Imperator KAICAP = Caesar ΓAIOC = Gaius OVAΛEPIOC = Valerius ΔIOKΛHTIANOC = Diocletianus CEBACTOC = Augustus Reverse: L Δ = regnal year 4
Yes those symbols I can't find them anywhere, I knew they're Greek, I wasn't very desicriptive sorry. But I'm on a tablet for a little while longer & can't find the Greek alphabet
@stevex6 I kind of goofed my post that Oticilia was my first silvered ant., several months back. I believe she's been posted before. LOVE YOU PIG !!!!!!!!
