I went to a local thrift shop looking for a large flashlight with a big reflector. I found a 5 cell unit in really poor condition but the reflector was in great shape. It was 87 cents with tax, not bad. I asked the clerk if she had a trash can close buy and thru out the rest of it, wow did I get a funny look!
He's using the reflector from the flashlight as a way to include the edges of the coin in his imaging. There was a thread here within the last couple of weeks about it.
Haha, I wish I could have seen the lady's face when you threw it out. I really like the idea of using the dished reflector to image the edge. Do you have any Bust Halves (or really, any Castaing machined early US coinage)? If so, could you image the edge of one of those and show us how it looks?
I'm back the only thing I could find was a Austria coin which I think is a modern re-strike. If anyone knows what this is please let me know. I found it 1780 SF Austria Maria Theresia Thaler Restrike 1 Thaler .833 Silver
Yup, that is an MTT. The originals are quite scarce, but restrikes have been made for hundreds of years. They are fascinating, and historically quite important.
I think these photos explain it: My cell phone camera (Galaxy S6) can photo-edit to make a mirror image, so the edge inscription appears readable:
