Ok, @ancientnut I DON'T have a Seripos Frog Stater, but I DO have a FROG: and @stevex6 , the Frog was the primary reason I got it, not just for its history! (oops, broke my rule...) LUCERIA Anonymous, ca. 217-212 BC, AE uncia (7.36g). Obv: Frog viewed from above Rev: corn-ear, pellet left & retrograde letter L left, Ref: T&V-285. Comments: crudely cast as always
Frogs ftw! They're so cute! I'd love to have a sub-theme of reptiles/amphibians on ancients in my collection. I already have the Augustus/Agrippa dupondius with the crocodile and a Thrace hemidrachm with the lizard. So, it's a start. A frog would definitely be up on the wish list. Thanks, Alegandron. Erin
Yeah, I broke some of my rules a bit... (coins as placemarkers in history). Frog was too cool. Not too many that I had seen. And a Aes Grave... BOOM: capture mode for me! LOL, and it has TAKEN me a while to figure out your Avatar name, but got a GREAT laugh when I researched it!!! Then your Avatar tops it all off!
Wha? => hey, where did you get the frog? (is that sweet baby a new addition?!) ... very cool (totally jealous)
If I was one of the people that paid tens of thousands of dollars for the other examples I would definitely want my money back right about now. Any auction house making such statements definitely does not Inspire much confidence in the authenticity of these coins.
Gee-wiz would love that aureus in my collection zumbly, don't know if I would sell the house to buy it though.
Man, I would jump at the chance for that coin. Unfortunately, I can see it going way past my budget. I'm so happy that you've discovered the awesomeness of the Daker! I'm just tryin' to spread the love. Erin
I'm not sure why this thread that I started almost a year and a half ago was re-activated, but it concerned a coin being offered at auction at that time with serious doubts as to whether ANY of the known specimens were authentic. No flaming required, just logic, Theodosius. The minimum bid for the frog stater offered by NAC was CHF 28,000. If I won with that bid, I would have paid a total of more than $36,000. So, you're suggesting I buy a coin for that amount and THEN submit it for slabbing to see if it's genuine? Seems a little cart-before-the-horse to me!
Ha ha, my whole response was a sarcastic comment playing on how most of us don't really trust or like the slabbing services for ancients. Just a little joke.
No worries! I am glad someone brought back your old thread, I never knew anything about these staters before. John
There are many pretty bronze Seriphos pieces, if somebody collects Cyklades, without the authenticity doubts of the silver frog staters
That is surprising. I haven't seen any coins of Seriphos offered for sale in about a decade! Regarding the frog, http://www.cngcoins.com/Coin.aspx?CoinID=251378 was a lot of replicas. These coins are so rare even the replicas sold for over $100 on average! There is also a Christodoulos forgery, see http://snible.org/coins/christodoulos/m.jpg #402.
