I've had this coin for quite a while, and a few years ago I posted it on this forum and did not receive a consensus on whether or not people though it had been cleaned. Some people thought it would straight grade, others didn't. To me, it looks probably cleaned, but I thought I would run it by this forum one more time. Either way, it has very nice details preserved, especially on Liberty's face and the eagle's body.
Choice AU details, probably lightly cleaned, but might straight-grade. Reckon it's worth a shot? Even if it ends up getting a "details" grade, it's still a sharp coin.
Yep. Same here, very sharp coin…nice details and worth a shot. Yes, cleaned but so many from the 19th Century are…as evidenced by Morgans. Still, that’s a coin that would command a spot in any collection…mo…Spark
Thanks for your thoughts, everyone. I agree with the general consensus that the coin was cleaned at some point. It's too bad, because if it hadn't it would be an extremely nice coin overall. The detail on it remains pretty strong. I bought it at a coin show in 2017 and it seemed really under priced. When I brought it to the dealer to buy it, he did a double take and seemed to look intently at the coin and the price. He almost seemed concerned. I was thinking "ah, this coin was priced incorrectly." Then he suddenly smiled and said "Oh! What a nice coin! The reverse is especially nice!" and sold it to me at the displayed price. At that time, I had not fully educated myself on cleaned coins, so I wasn't absolutely sure why he let it go so cheaply. Well, now I know. It's a nice coin, but I still consider it a "problem coin" and will likely part ways with it sometime in the near future (different people have different tolerances for "problem coins"). That said, I don't think I want to take the time and money to get it graded. I'll let someone else do that. Thanks again!
It's been cleaned, but at the EF grade level, I would say "market acceptable." If it were to pushed at the AU price level, that would be too high.
