    I think is a 1968 or 66 error

Something has spilt onto the coin and dried, or as mentioned above it is adhesive stuck to the surface.

Not an error nor machine damage.
Dried adhesive or substance in the surface.

If you have ever used 2 part epoxy glue (A + B ), a coin edge mixes it and picks it up better than tooth picks or ice cream sticks. If the excess remains on the coin its like the example and harder than !!!! to remove after a few hours. Its usually grey in color though. Jim

You have a 1968 copper cent that has dried adhesive of some type on it. It’s not a mint error and it’s not machine damage. How can I tell it’s a 1968? Look at the loop on the bottom half of the date and you’ll see the six has a large loop than the eight does.

Yikes! If it's not a glue, it's something very corrosive like acid that damaged it.

May have been in Brett's pocket during the time he was looking around ship for Jonesy.
