Took 2+ years to find this coin (well, MFD found it for me). 1856 FE (S-3) PCGS MS-62 with Eagle Eye sticker. It's the only 1856 FE that can grade MS, not PF.
Wow. What a terrific specimen. Well-struck (in context), lovely surfaces. This is a treat, kanga. Thank you for sharing it. Put it this way: A PCGS Details S-3, gouged up badly and in about Good grade, went for nearly $5000 at Heritage in January of this year....
If that is in a three prong PCGS slab and is graded MS it must have been a reholdering. PCGS stopped grading 56 FE as anything but Proof years ago.
That's a beauty. I can't wait that long to buy a coin if only I had patience but I will see something shiny and well you know what I mean. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
My opinion of the coin improved dramatically when I saw that it was an 1856 and not an 1857. Very cool indeed. Nice and clean for a 62.
Thanks for all of the positive responses. I now have only two more coins needed to complete my FE/IHC set. I particularly wanted my 1856 to be an S-3 just because it can be graded MS. From what I've read NGC will not grade ANY 1856 as MS; they only grade them as PF. This coin has been truly graded by PCGS as MS and is in what I'm sure is a relatively recent PCGS slab. Can I search up the number on the PCGS site and get it's grading history?
No. they just have the current information. You have no way to know when it was originally slabbed. They have only used the three prong slabs since 2010 (with three different reverse labels, possibly four.) and they stopped grading 56 FE as anything but Proof before that time so it has to be a reholdering.
