I was weeding out my Wheat pennies and came across a very unusual one. The head of Lincoln appears to be a double die. Has anyone seen or heard of a penny like this. Is it worth having graded? What are your thoughts.
I agree, Machine Doubling (also know as Strike Doubling). If you don't know what that is: https://www.error-ref.com/?s=machine+doubling Welcome to CoinTalk!
It’s called MD or mechanical doubling. It’s a very common form of doubling and not worth any extra. Welcome to CT.
The correct Numismatic terminology is Doubled die. Not double die. It's not a doubled die and it's not worth getting graded. And if you think you have a variety or mint error you also need to pay for Attribution. So there are two fees, grading and atttribuion. You will learn a lot from us here on this forum. As others note, aging die/wear and movement. I’ll add that there appears to be evidence of a tool man trying a hand with an engraving tool to improve the bust profile. Lots going on. You’ll note the outer devices are starting to speed into the rim.
Thank you all for the warm welcome as well as your post and thoughts on this coin. I am glad I joined. Not only will I learn a lot about coins but hopefully save myself a lot of money and mistakes and hopefully gain friends along the way.
