Hey everyone! Well, things have quieted down and I've gotten a chance to image a few new coins from a show this weekend. One in particular is catching my eye: Now, I am aware that the 1933 shows (on Numista) that there are some "fallen date" varieties where the last digits of the date drop down, but it doesn't mention them for any other dates. If we take a closer look at the date of this 1934, we see two interesting items of note. First, we can see that the 4 of the date is rotated and looks like a possible 4/4. Holding the coin in hand, I can see a clear separation between the main body of the 4 and the underlying crossbar of the second 4. There is also evidence of another 1 under the first digit. We can also see that the digits of the date do not evenly line up. I've added a couple parallel lines to help demonstrate, using the top of the highest digit (the 9) as a guide: So, my question to my fellow Mexican collectors - what do you think is going on with this coin, and have you seen previous similar examples?
Looks like a double punched and fallen 4. I am not a huge collector of Mexican coins, but find the series just rife with errors/varieties such as these. I bet Mexican collectors have fun.
I have a few Mexican coins mostly common stuff pulled from circulation but I do have some pesos in silver and 1/10 Libertads. I think you have found a variety but I can't help with determining if it's a new one. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Looking at multiple examples on eBay (just because there are quite a few for sale) I see lots of different positions for the 4 - so @cpm9ball I'm thinking you may be correct in that the 4 was punched separately. Not always seeing the same 4/4 characteristics, though... Even found one that they got level:
Here's mine. At first I thought I had the identical die, but the 4 is a little different. After superimposing the two images as best I can, I agree the 4 was punched separately - the other digits align precisely.
Looking at mine in hand the 3 looks normal, but the four seems to have some doubling. There also might be some doubling on the S in Peso.
Pretty cool! 4 variety's posted. Years ago I bought a pair of MS 1939' UN PESO'. One had an open 9 and one closed. I like the design.
