My wife went to the bank for me today. I always tell her to ask for "old style" notes. She got one a 1969A $20 note. No tears or writing but circulated. VG-F note. So what should I do with it? I'll spend it. The reason I'm not keeping it is that it's not particularly rare. About 80 million of them were printed for this block (G-B) If it was CU or even AU I would probably keep it. If it was a 1969B series I would keep it. The point here folks is that just because a note is old does not make it valuable. Just like with coins education is the key. Honestly, I believe there is a lot more "rare" currency to be picked up at face value than coins but you have to know what to look for and what to pass up. Dropping one cent for a wheatie in change is a no brainer but dropping $20 for a 1969A is a different story. That's six gallons of gas (how pathetic is that?). Just sharing an opinion, a perspective and a little information with y'all. clembo
I might keep it, only because i don't have all that many notes to begin with and am trying to build up my collection After i have a bit, then i might weed out notes like that, but to be honest if you were local i'd probably trade you a normal $20 for it.
I spent my beat up 1953 Jefferson at work. The way the boss looked at it..she probably thought it was counterfeit..lol
so sad to see peeps only into collecting if a profit is to be made. IMHO of course, collecting is about history, and owning a piece of it. Sometimes that does include owning a somewhat rare peice, most often it includes owning pieces that do not carry a value much above face. but - to each their own - i just think its sad.
Don't feel too sad. I have 1969A series $20 notes that I've pulled from circulation. They are all star notes. 20 bucks is 20 bucks and at presennt I need the 20 bucks. If I pulled every note from circulation that was "old" in the last 10 years my mortgage would be behind, I'd be scraping for gas money but have a ton of cash in the safe. My real point here is to beginning currency collectors. Sometimes you have to let it go. clembo
gasp ... 'let it go'? i would walk to work, diet on spam, and live on the streets. ok, no i wouldnt!!! As a last ditch effort, sometimes the collection has to thin itself out to make ends meet. it is sad, but sometimes necessary - especially if you live in Michigan with its very weak and shaky economy! I feel your pain. I am nearing the point to where i too might have to part with some objects. Good luck!!!
Daggarjon I feel your pain and believe me it took TOO long for me to start "letting things go". Used to see $12,000 in cash every day. Also used to see about $100 in star notes a day. Was making less than $500 a week at that time so had to learn and learn fast! No spam for me tonight and the jobsite is an 80 mile round trip. Like I said earlier. Not like pulling a wheatie out of circulation. That I can ALWAYS afford. clembo
if i see a silver certicate in circulation, i would obviously keep it! if i see an old style bill, i will buy it for face, check it out, then spend it. if i kept every star note, intersting serial number, and "old bill', i would have lots of cash. i still keep rare star notes, but the common ones are spent. i spend old style bills and pre 1995 notes only if the serial number is not interesting, is not a star, or is not crisp. as for coins, i keep all old coins!
yup, I've passed on many star notes. I only have 3 right now, two 1 dollar bills, and a 5 - all with 00 as the beginning number (oddly enough) and I only keep them because they're fairly crisp. If i kept all the ones I saw I would have a few twentys and tens. lol I keep all notes from Pre 1960's (include the 60's) unless they're in poor condition.
Value, value, value! Is that all most of you think about? How about thinking back to the history of this bill? When you watch President Nixon give a speech about Chinese trade relations on CSPAN-3, you can think to yourself "This bill I will be sending off to be destroyed was around back then, somewhere". When you watch a movie or tv show from the 1980's such as Die Hard or Family Ties, you can think to yourself, "This bill was around during this tv show as well" and so on! If you have old bills such as this and don't want to hang on to it, why not offer it to someone in the auction forum first? Do a face and sase trade and who knows, someone might even offer a little over face value for it!
good idea NOS, i would certainly buy most if not all star notes for face from others who dont want them
No that's not all that I and many others think about. If you read between the lines I'm trying to give some advice to new currency collectors here. The advice is if you can't afford it then you need to learn what to pass up. That's why I have currency books to help me make these decisions. I miss seeing the cash that I used to believe me but can also tell you that when I WAS seeing that much cash I put away at LEAST $4000 in various notes. There were times when I could have used those funds as well but guess what - I still have them. As for posting it on the open forum I already thought of that and intend to do so. Almost mentioned it in the thread but trying to stay within the rules. If it goes I'll start putting them up more often as I come across them. No problem by me. clembo
I have never sold any of my collection. I actually probly would have kept the formentioned note, for myself. I was just being silly.
....and for your sins you shall be subjected to the COMFY CHAIR! Sorry it took so long to reply but my walk has become increasingly silly as of late.
