I have been offered a chance to purchase this 55DDO, it's in a 2x2 which if I open it's mine. So what do you think. Thanks for the help
I wouldn't open the 2" x 2" cardboard holder. You can get a much nicer 1955 Wheat cent, that hasn't been damaged in the minting process, for far less money than that coin.
Pretty heavily hairlined on the obverse. It better be a good price, and you'll need to be OK with a Details coin. Edit: I hope gronnh20 is being sarcastic....
Thanks to everyone, I'm going to pass on this. Some thing just didn't look right to me either @Insider
Nothing screams "counterfeit" to me, but one always must wonder why certain coins aren't in TPG plastic, especially this one. In addition to the suspect surfaces, the color might also be not market acceptable. I don't like the terms of sale, either. If it were offered like this at a coin show, that would be different, since I could show it around and get lots of opinions easily, even from grading services. Take a look at this web page regarding a struck counterfeit 55 DDO.
Try listening to this SCREAM: Note the position of the letters that overlap in the word liberty. Sheesh, I don't. I've done the same thing here before. In truth, I almost did it again today on another thread.
Your right, the coin was disfigured by the damaged die. Are you sure it is a 1955/55 DOUBLED DIE? Some of the other folks ain't so sure. There is a fella across the street from me right now with a 3-legged Buffalo nickel his dad bought from Littleton(a long time ago) for $90.00. His dad has passed. I have tried to get him to let me send it in along with other coins to have slabbed. First question, "How do I know I will get my same coin back?" Even showing him they grade coins way more expensive than his coins, he still will not budge. I even tried to get him to just send a 1853-O(rays) Seated half in G-4 he had, nope. If dad wanted it graded he would have had it graded. Can't argue with that.
I believe this is a fake. Liberty is not right as is the motto. The date also looks off. Don't open the 2 x 2. This is too expensive a coin to buy if it is a forgery and it is counterfeited a lot. Google search the date and compare images from reputable sources as to what you have in hand and you'll see what I mean. This is a genuine 1955 DDO. Does your look like this? Compare the lettering and numbers very carefully, watching which way they run and how they are printed. Yours in hand shows "LIBERTY" printed entirely different from this known example. The "19" in the date is also off. Hint: The word "LIBERTY" goes on a reverse angle. PASS, PASS, PASS.
