I'd hate to get my 1st Spouse coins and have them rattling around loose. Did they solve that problem yet?
Probably not. I expect a million letters-to-the-editor in upcoming issues of Coin World complaining of the same problem.
coin loose during transt. it also true to 20th anniversary silver set. on the other hand. the mint allowed us to order the spouse gold again today for two hours. the reason is that maybe too many people returned the coins.
I hate to tell you Danr but I received my three SAE-W's last week and one was loose in the box out of its holder the other two were ok. Here's the best part, I sent the coin back using the mints return label, unfortunately the Post Office sent the coin right back to ME! If you notice the pre-printed label has the To and From, but it arrived today at my house not the Fulfillment center! for five more days of rattling around. So, now do I mail it back again with ins.? or eat the loss and future shipping and ins loss and keep the beat up coin!?!?! I think I will eat my losses and put it in the non-existant slot in my Dansco book. I love and hate the Mint and that other upstanding service called the USPS. Can you tell I'm really annoyed today?!
just a reminder don't order too few. order more. the box is heavy. the usps personnel will have to carry slowly and carefully. if not, it will be too light for them to throw and play it around. that's why it can damage the box. just simple and common sense.
My 2007w silver eagles were stuck in the boxes so tight that i used a small screw driver to get them out. They were really in there. As far as the mint taking additional gold spouse coins, One person on another forum stated that they call the mint people and was told the reason they took additional orders was due to them canceling orders from people trying to exceed the maximum limit. I do not mean to be a mint basher but I have have very little luck on getting factual information from the mint. One would think they more than enough "next in line" to fill any of these type of cancellations. I just hope they are not giving a lot of people false hope. EDIT... Checked the latest on the mint accepting additional additional spouse coins. According to the forum. It was an error from the mint and these orders from today will be canceled. Something about the brass coins getting mixed in there, something like that . All I can say is, another fine job.
Are you suggesting it's my fault because I didn't "buy enough"? Are you kidding me! You blame the consumer for the Mint's poor and well documented problem or coins popping out? The box had only one air pack in it, they should have packed it correctly. I'll tell you what does not make common sense, assuming that everyone can buy what YOU can afford to buy. I would have liked to order more but I couldn't afford to order a lot, I am not rich and live on budget that don't allow me to order a lot. What if it was three gold coins would that be enough? would they have packed that better?
Gold coins would have been packed by FEDEX, overnighted to you. So they most likely would have been packaged better.
I dont think it matters to the USPS whether your package weighs 1 pound or 10 pounds they're going to toss it around like a rag doll anyway. I've recieved heavy boxes in the mail that looks like its been drug behind the mail truck instead of in it. So whether you order 1 coin or 100 coins from the mint, the USPS employees still have the same frame of mind.
Thanks Indianhead, my sentiments exactly buying more was not the problem or issue poor packing and treatment of shipment was.
I have a horror story about first spouses from the mint. The coins usually slip out of the little slot they are placed in but this time I received one of my Martha proofs OUTSIDE of the little plastic protective case!! I didn't touch the coin, but I was able to get some latex gloves and gently put it back inside the case. I looked the coin over very well and there didn't seem to be any damage done to it with the other plastic pieces hitting it and resting on it. I was very upset to say the least, but I don't want to send it back to the mint in fear of never getting a replacement. The mint seriously needs to look at their packaging of these expensive coins. They are, after all, taking their sweet time with shipping them out--you would at least expect some of that time being taken to carefully package them. Absurd! By the way, FedEx shipped it.
packaging the mint produces a lot of products within a year. so in order to ship most of its coins to the collectors. they rush the packaging department without increasing its personnel. that's bad.
That is bad. Glad your coin wasn't damaged. I do want to give the Mint credit for working towards a solution. My MW proof arrived this morning and I noticed that there was a foam pad inside the box overlying the capsule. This didn't keep the capsule in the well; it had come out, but the foam did keep it from getting scratched against the hard wood of the inside of the case (and conversely scratching the inside of the case) They have also added a bevel to the bottom of the well. At first I thought this was so you could stand the coin up in the case (a lot of Canadian coins are packaged this way) but it's too shallow. I think it's there to make it easier to pick up the capsule. See pix.
I also want give them credit. I just got my Uncirculated Marthas in the mail today and I noticed that little foam pad. I think this certainly helps with the problem and it makes it much harder for the coin to rattle around in the case even if it pops out of the groove.
Mine fell out of the felt holder, but was still in the capsule. It had no chance at MS70 to begin with anyway. Mine had no foam pad?! Hopefully my other one will arrive soon. I went for a 'presale' :/ The felt holders are still shedding like a mofo.
packaging problem before many years ago. the mint packaging is much better than now. but quality and packaging is still way behind some foreign countries. but then, the foreign coins charge much more than us.
