1977 Quater No Mint Mark

First and foremost I am new to this site still trying to learn how to navigate throughout this site. Secondly, it was not my attentions to ask the same question because I heard it loud and clear Chris. Lastly, I know nothing about coins but thought it would be an excellent hobby to get in to. I searched online for sites that could assist, as well as, connect with people who have experience in coin collecting.

You ask a question. You get the same answer from several people. What is so hard to understand? We don't mind helping you if you really want to learn, but when you question what you're told, it's like telling everyone, "I don't believe you."

The picture is misleading.

This coin is a virtually Gem BU with severe mint set hazing as is typical with 1977 clads in mint sets (I believe).

The owner probably spent it simply because it is hazed though it might have other problems that make it not worth the effort to restore and aren't apparent in the photo. These can be brought back to life with a prolonged soak in isopropyl alcohol.

...If you soak this coin be sure to use 91% alcohol since 70% (the 30% water) can destroy it. If the alcohol doesn't work there are other solutions that probably will. A 50: 50 mix of alcohol and acetone will usually work and if all else fails warm amonia with an alcohol rinse might work.

It's hardly impossible I'm wrong about this coin. The photos simply aren't clear and don't provide a very good point of reference.

I think another picture with the coin tilted up just a little and the light source about 45 degrees above the top would prove it to me and everyone else.

It can be very difficult determining the condition of a coin by a picture and as the previous poster wisely pointed out, it is primarily experience.

In any case though this is a great hobby with great people in it and shouldn't be judged by a thread gone bad.

I think what we're seeing here are the effects from the PVC from the interior of the mint sets. The packaging has a thin layer of soft PVC plastic as part of and on the inside of each side of the packaging. Where the coin touches this packaging it hazes. Some dates like the '69 tend to get mottled hazing and the '75 to '80 tend to just get white haze on the highest points.

The luster on mint set coins is highly variable and some can be quite PL. In this instance it appears the coin was lit from below and to the left which highlights a somewhat PL luster in the lower regions where there is no hazing.

To convince yourself look at the detail on the hair around the ear. This is where the first signs of wear appear on most '77 quarters but there is none.

Certainly the coin could be polished but I doubt it is.

 

I'm curious what part of theountry you're in if you don't mind saying.

I believe these are just shadows created by the low angle of the light and the reflected light.
