    Hello everyone,

Can someone explain the 1971 D Kennedy Half dollar which weighed 11.3 grams is for sale at $13000.00? I read where it's 40% silver but this is common weight isn't it?

According to PCGS auction price, the most valuable 1971 Kennedy half Dollars coins are: In 2018, a Kennedy half Dollar, 1971-D MS61 was sold for $13,000.00. In 2019, a Kennedy half Dollar, 1971-S PR69 was sold for $12,000.00. In 2023, a MS67 was sold for $2,900.00.

I looked in Red Book weight differences between the 2 types of half dollars is .16 grams. Clad @ 11.34 and 40% @ 11.50 grams. Not sure if PCGS if they document coins to the hundredth of a gram. I guess PCGS wanted it known that it was weighed. But its look like the coin is probably within tolerances of weight.

Thank you, I'm not an expert on coins because it's confusing so much to learn, especially when it comes to the weight of the coins. Appreciate your response

It's an error coin, one that really should not exist. The last of the 40% silver were supposed to be struck in 1970. A leftover planchet should not have been used.

However, it's really incorrect to say that's the most valuable 1971-D without qualifying it as an error.

The toppop MS68 has a PCGS price guide at $3,750. MS67+ at $375. But MS67 is just listed at $70.

Thank you, sorry but I'm still confused, are you saying the 1971 D Kennedy half if the weight is 3.0 is considered 40% silver? I have Kennedy halves but weight is 2.6 and these are clad right? Again Thank you

The one that sold for 13k is the error.
