I just won this in a small auction and don't have it in hand yet.... The rim at around 12 o'clock... Is that a hit or is there some sort of minor clip going on here?
Probably won't have it in hand until about this time next week. It's a local auction house that I play around on and they tend to be a tad slow with shipping.
One look and I feel it’s the smallest clip I’ve seen in years. I say clip because it’s on the obverse and the reverse. Best to say it’s a nick of a clip. Lol
I am not convinced it is a definite determination. I have seen similar issues before, that were post mint caused.
I am on the clipped planchet side too. The flow lines in that area look correct for a clip. The reverse may have a bit of BE near the "A" of states.
Well-spotted! I missed that at first glance. I agree that the surfaces don't look like the usual "grabbed with something" PMD. I also don't see any outward deformation of the rim/edge that I'd expect if the spot got squeezed post-mint.
Now that is a great visual aid for me. I am not a fellow that seeks out error coins. I am a die hard type coin guy. But I'll compare it to your photo once it arrives.... Is this just a matter of the planchet being stamped out adjacent to a previously punched planchet?
I didn’t intentionally purchase my 43S half as an error. It was an eBay buy with multiple coins from a dealer who needed to sell something, anything, in 2010. The staining kept out bidders and shipping was already paid along with the rest. I bulked up on silver at around $12/oz. Never dipped it but I may rethink that
I'd expect a lot more ugliness on the edge if that were the case. I'd also expect more disturbance on the rays that extend into the funky zone -- but if this were a planchet void, why are those struck so strongly? Why does the E in PEACE show up at all?
I think it's actually called a disc clip https://sullivannumismatics.com/min...lanchet: Disc Clip, coin's diameter in any way.
