What would cause this mark 1878 cc GSA

Most likely debris from the GSA packaging, they printed the black holder, then punch out the space for the coin.
The punch likely left some of the insert behind.

So did I read your post correctly: A flake of BLACK PLASTIC left over when the insert was made somehow got between the planchet and the die as the coin was being struck in another part of the Mint)? Hummmm. I must not have understood the post.

 

You do know we aren't talking about the intentional black pieces of plastic that hold the coin in place, right?

 

What part of "debris from the GSA packaging (punched-out)" did you think the poster was writing about? Don't you get it? The "dull rectangular patch" was ON THE COIN after it was struck and left the press. It was never near the plastic container until sometime later IN ANOTHER ROOM when it was put into the holder.

Why such ... ? IMO, you need to take some grading classes. The ANA probably covers this characteristic in the Minting & Error course and the Coin Grading course.

Note: It took a long time for me to "come down from the mountain." A much more informed member than you or me posted the correct answer IMMEDIATELY!

The rest of this thread is full of misinformation of the brown color and wild guesses from someone who may be posing as a coin dealer. I suggest he take some courses also:

Look, I don't know everything and LEARN SOMETHING NEW about coins every day! For today, I found another unlisted hub on a coin type! Anyone could have done the same but they didn't on this one. Yet, after looking at hundreds & hundreds of Shield nickels for two decades, I never noticed all the different reverse hubs as I was not looking for them or curious enough at the time. Therefore I had to read about them and learn from other professional numismatists who wrote about them.

I have looked at coins using a stereo microscope for decades. That is the ONLY reason my GUESSES may have a good chance of being close to correct.

Some of the coins I ask about are already in my collection. Others I ask about I have interest in purchasing but because I ask, they usually become someone else's problem coin.

Like most forums, many people are anonymous posters. I've had the pleasure of meeting acquaintance of one member and hope to meet others in the future.

Mush of what I have learned has come from my father but I have also learned ALOT in the short time I've been here just by posting threads, asking questions, reading responses, and googling answers.

I don't claim to know it all. Heck, some of my responses are educated guesses and I'll gladly accept it if I'm wrong. You shouldn't ignore someone just because of this. I'm quite certain each of you can learn from one another something, we are all an expert on at least one thing...

 

I can't ignore you. I wish to educate you when I "come down from the mountain." That's what CT is all about. One more suggestion besides getting the ANA's Correspondence Courses...Don't believe anything anyone tells you here (including me); check it out for yourself. That way you'll learn much faster.
