Congrats on the new additions, Gil... that grid is shaping up very nicely. I don't collect by rulers, so you have plenty that I don't, but here's an empress I'd been chasing after for awhile now. I won it yesterday, so it's not in hand yet, but I'm happy to be showing it on your thread. AQUILIA SEVERA 2nd and 4th wife of Elagabalus AR Denarius. 2.93g, 20mm. Rome mint, AD 220-222. RIC 226. O: IVLIA AQVILIA SEVERA AVG, draped bust right. R: CONCORDIA, Concordia standing left, holding patera and double cornucopiae; lit altar to left; star in right field.
WOW!! Lots of slot fillers posted and I'm going to add a list of emperors you guys have tomorrow when I have time. Just like I did the last time. The last time we filled up so many it was truly amazing for real!!
I didn't know you were also at my Facebook group Ancientscoins or you were one of the ones that I talked to awhile back that wanted to join when I mentioned it but if you don't mind giving me your real name in PM I can definitely send you a friend request and chat once in awhile or at least I'll know who you are. If I had a higher budget I could definitely get more but the trick is to know the inventory and prices on all the coins that are available for certain emperors and you'd have to do a lot of work searching for each one and I've done it as well as using my wish/want list in VCoins and MA-Shops. If you know dealers, you can talk to them privately and get a coin cheaper because they don't have as many fees and can sell it cheaper. I got my Romulus Caesar that way and other coins. There are a multitude of shops online to search. Coins are very very plentiful for sure. If you have a high budget, you'll definitely be able to get more than I and faster as well. You have a very nice impressive collection and I'm glad you used the list that was made by Rasiel Suarez and adapted for use on this board by me and Stevex6.
Very nice coins even though they are not of the highest grade. Congrats on the Otho but I might have to settle for a provincial unless I can get one at a good price. I haven't looked for one in some time though. On a no buying coins phase right now.
Very nice for sure. I think I can score a decent Antonia later on but the Agrippina might be more difficult to obtain at a decent grade and price. Thanks for posting those.
I look forward to seeing that Uranius Antoninus coin for sure. Those can be a pain to locate for any price. Actually, I prioritize on getting my Imperial coins for my ruler slots but if I have to fill in with a provincial, that's ok with me. I also collect all across the board for ancient coins. My plan is to collect from every region. I even have ancient India and Chinese coins.
I know exactly what you mean and I don't buy it for Postumus coins either. If it doesn't have the name on it, that's not what the coin says. Just like for Constantius II coins in the name of Vetranio ain't cutting it because it's more likely the coins were minted at the same mint but are in fact for Constantius II. Just like some people say here is a rare late Roman that doesn't have the legend on it but it only looks like this certain emperor like Avitus for example. But I ain't buying that either unless I can see the legend for a fact.
That's one lady I need to get and maybe I will someday. That's a very nice coin with excellent engraving skills. Although, the flowlines are very pronounced with that coin.
Haha, thank you and that's "Daryl" with one "r". Haha, never thought I'd have to say that. Yeah, I have been very much focused on collecting Roman Rulers but I also like other coins. I'm planning on getting as many regions as I can in the future. Gotta keep going if I can't get any more emperors one day. They will get very very expensive. And honestly, there is no way I want to spend a few hundred dollars on a coin. I know that others can do it but I can't.
Ah yes, I'm aware of the problematic "Avitus" AE4s. Not one of them has enough legend for a certain attribution. After Valentinian III, the AE4s become a lot more problematic. I see in auctions AE4s attributed to Anthemius or Julius Nepos, but I can't for the life of me work out how the seller reached that attribution. More often than not the emperor's monogram is unpublished - but looks a little like that of a rare emperor if you squint. That's not good enough for me. Tooling is so rampant in these very late AE4 issues, that I'd prefer a tremisis or solidus which will give me a lot more certainty.
Well, here's the Uranius for your viewing pleasure: It's a provincial from Emesa - with the Baetyl of Elagabal in a temple on the reverse ... confirming that the meteorite was back in Emesa in 253AD.
Very nice Uranius provincial coin for sure and a nice sand patina. Love it!! That's what I like about those provincials. They are larger coins and have more information in the legend more often than not and with awesome views of buildings and temples. Even the single standing figures can be nice as well.

=> oh, and that dealer is awesome (I have bought several (6) great coins from him) Oh, and he's a sweet Canadian dude from my home province, BC ... => Praefectus (in the house, yo!!)
Wow @Gil-galad, impressive list. Well done As others I think Balbinus and Pupienus should find their way to your trays someday and rather join the "likely" list. Good luck on finding them I didn't check precisely but think the first 100 are in my collection ; the first one I see on the list that I don't have for sure is Zeno (101), and the two farest are Domitius Domitianus (161) and Tranquillina (168), although they both are provincials (alexandrian actually).....way to go ! Those are definitely decent budget coins for both of those two rulers. I just updated the list and count. Thanks Mikey Zee.
At Gil-galad, that is great progress! Nice coins! Congrats!!! At Zumbly, love that Aquilia Severa!!! Fantastic eye appeal!!! Great pic, also!!!
