I have inherited a St Gaudens commemorative medal in silver that weighs 7 troy oz. It has a relief of Christopher Columbus on the obverse and an illustration of St Gauden's NH studio capped by a gold washed depiction of his double eagle design. It looks pretty but I wonder what value it has other than for the silver content. Any info would be appreciated!
Many of the St. Gauden pieces fetch very good money if authenticated. As a sculptor, St. Gauden worked in many fashions before creating the famous coins commissioned by the president. If you can post a picture of this piece, I can help point you in a direction. If it is indeed authentic, it will indeed be more valuable than just the content of silver.
THANKS I WILL... My feeling is that this was struck to raise funds for his studio and museum in NH many years after he died... it commemorates his home and art
