I voted Peace Dollar. It's a graceful and beautiful design. Other favorites: SLQ, Walking Liberty Half (with the original eagle reverse, though the reverse as used on the ASE is good too), and the incuse Indian Quarter & Half Eagle designs, though I own no gold. I also collect British pre-decimal coinage from Victoria through the present monarch, and I will add my support for the Gothic Crown as well. I would love to see an official reissue maybe in the form of a bullion coin, much as the MTT is continued today.
Hard to pick a favorite. Morgans always hold a special place in my heart, as my avatar indicates. However, some of the classic silver commemoratives are just stunning. I love that you can find these in a mix of appearances: bright white, toned, or a uniform gray patina. California is a great design, but I think right now Oregon Trail is my favorite.
I can't pick a classic favorite US issue, which probably means I like almost all of them. Which probably also explains why I have as many examples in my collection as I do in addition to my Morgan and Peace date sets
My favorite silver not including commemoratives gas to be the trade dollar, I like the symbolism that it portrays. Also like the classic commemoratives series. For gold my favorite is the Liberty $20 gold piece. Sent from my A463BG using Tapatalk
I can't pick a favorite but this is one of them: Alexander the Great of Macedonia - Gold Stater - Babylon Helmeted head of Athena facing right with griffin or serpent on helmet Nike standing left, holding wreath, MI on left, monogram in wreath below right wing BASILEUS ALEXANDROY (King Alexander) Struck (Posthumous) c. BC 311-305, Babylon mint Weight: 8.56gm, diameter approx 20mm
I'd like to give everyone the ability to correct their mistakes and change their answer to "Peace Dollar"
I love the Morgan, but the Barber is also a nice design. I also like the Standing Liberty. The Seated is also nice. Walker is Ok because it has been over used. The older stuff is nicer than what the Mint are doing now. Too many distraction on the current coin design. Older is better.
Adolph Weinman was a phenomenal designer. I bet Charles Barber hated his guts. I like the basicness and beauty of the Mercury Dime as my favorite. An MS 63 or above walker is also a great design. Also, several early commemorative coins had fantastic designs - Oregon Trail half, California Diamond Jubilee, Pac Pac, Bay Bridge, Lincoln, etc., etc.
i know the barber liberty head coinage wasnt admired greatly when it was in circulation, but i thought a nice chunk of that animosity died out. I guess not, looking at the poll. There's something beautiful and really collectible about these coins in xF and above, especially when luster is present. Just look at the prices for barber halves in these grades - theyre quite scarce and valuable. And even the smaller denominations hold their weight well
It would be interesting to go back in history and see Weinman and Barber have a discussion over a drink with President Roosevelt as the bar referee. Two dudes with different design perspectives, and a president who wanted to change things.
