I found a strange coin in my lot of uncleaned romans and byzantines. I am new to this so I am still learning where to research these coins. The front has an anchor with the letters "RESHEN PFENNIG" and the other side has a double headed eagle clutching a sword and a ball, with a coat of arms in the middle. I have searched online all over and can't seem to find anything like it. Seemes out of place with the lot of coins I was cleaning. Was pretty encrusted at start, and came pretty clean in like new condition. Any help would be appreciated. Rick
Greetings and Welcome to the forum. What it sounds like is the seller salted your "uncleaned ancients" with a steel 'small dark grey' German ReichsPfennig from around the late 19th or early 20th centuries.
Welcome aboard, rickmco. You have got a reckoning counter of some sort. Can you please post some photos? Aidan.
Pics of the coin Here is a couple shots. learning how to get a good pic. Thanks for the welcome and the help. Rick
Thanks for the help Yes, from research it is a reckoning coin. Haven't been able to find exact info on it, but the inscription basically describes it as a reckoning coin. Evidently they are commonly found in excavations of older coins from what I have read. Again thanks for pointing me in the right direction. Rick
