Auction wins: JC, Domitian, and Tiberius

Were you tempted by the Julia Domna tetradrachm? I was but didn't bid, in part because I'd already won two other coins and in part because I'd like to find one just a little bit better. "A little bit better" will mean a huge jump in price. Rats, now I'm wishing I'd bid on today's tet. The price wasn't bad but there is no telling how high the winner was willing to go.

I did see the Julia Domna but like you I will hold out for one a bit better - I have a lot of other tet areas to explore so that might be a while. I really liked the Hadrian tet and obol but didn't bid because I was bidding on some other denarii - which I didn't get! Looking at Sixbid eased the pain as there are some good auctions coming up in the next couple of months.

Three exceptional coins Orfew, I see what you mean the Domitian bust looks a bit like his brother, and that Tiberius quadriga is a lot more scarce than his tribute penny. Excellent buy.

You are very kind, but these are three imperfect coins. The JC is off center and part of the trunk in off the flan. On the other hand I like that the name of Caesar is quite bold and clear.I also like the provenance. The Domitian has a nice portrait but has some scratches and the reverse looks a bit worn. The Tiberius is actually in really nice shape (to judge by the photo) but the coloring is distracting and to be honest a little ugly. It is all good though. These coins have been around for almost 2 millennia and their flaws I will call character. I probably overpaid a bit for the Tiberius and JC but all of these coins will take their respective places in my 12 Caesars set.

    Thanks again for your remarks.

Mate you buy what you can afford if they were any better than that you may not have won them, I actually like coins with a little bit of wear as well showing a bit of character, I seen the prices they were good buys. With the JC people pay crazy prices so keep that in mind.

Carausius Brother, can you spare a sestertius?

I lost the coin I wanted most, an old collection Otho diobol. Bidding got heated and I was the under-bidder. In retrospect, I should have gone higher. It's not easy to find an old collection Roman Egypt Otho!

That one was high on my wish list too but ultimately I didn't bid because of other targets in that auction and upcoming auctions. The old pedigree was definitely a plus and I'm sorry you didn't win it.

That's precisely why I let it go... too many other targets this season.

Those are three great coins Orfew, minor 'flaws' aside. The Tiberius is particularly wonderful.

    Cool wins folks !
I bid myself on four coins at this Naville auction but won just one. As others here I'm a bit reluctant to post before they're in hand, but what the heck, postal deities are asleep at this time of the day

@Alegandron - I had my eye on your pig coin. I liked the old collection tag. I did find a few places to spend my hard earned money.
This coin is for a friend who looks like the obverse. I will need help attributing this coin:
    Anonymous Servian RP Lydia.jpg
Lydia, Maeonia Pseudo-autonomous issue. Bronze Time of the Severans
Æ 19mm., 4.55g. Head of Herakles l. Rev. Omphale advancing r.; holding lion skin and club. SNG von Aulock 3012. SNG München 304. Very Fine.

I did find a few RR coins. I liked this one because I think they missed the attribution. At least I hope they did because I wanted the coin pictured.

I would call this one a Cr 133/1, TAMP.

Yet another coin from that sale I was very tempted to bid on. Oh well I got 3/4 targets so all is good. I really liked that Matienus when I first saw it and I like it even more now-great catch.

Nice haul! I was looking at your Victoriatus also. Nice job, and glad it is going to a known, albeit good home!

Thanks for not making a battle for me to get the Pig. I was surprised to find that control on a Victoriatus, and thought it would be fun for the Grandkids to see.
