Hi, I posted this in the General forum earlier but have just realised this is probably the better place! Sorry in advance if I ask daft questions already answered elsewhere. I've just started off on my journey in collecting ancient coins and unsurprisingly I'm already confused The first thing is the acronyms - I've looked around sites including here but I can't seem to find a full list of acronyms that can be used in coin descriptions, well at least in the description on the coin I have just purchased. It says "vgl S 46 Nr 9" - I'm guessing that's 'very good - low' or 'very good lustre (?)' but the other ones have me stuck.... unless it's a reference to a journal? My 'plan' is too collect a coin from all the Roman emperors where possible, but I'm super aware that might be harder than I think.... Cheers J
It would help if we knew what kind of coin it was. Some reference? Is that scrawled on the ID tag? Welcome to collecting ancient coins. Which period of the empire are you most interested in?
it may be German...vgl translates to "compare with" nr might be nach rechts or facing right. it would be helpful to see the coin.
Forgot to tell you @TerDev We do love pictures Here’s the basic smartphone setup Select Full Image just before you post
Hi, Pictures hopefully attached. I know this isn't strictly empire, or particularly flash/valuable, but honestly I bought it on a whim and now I've got the 'oooohhhhhh that's neat' problem happening with nearly coin I look at. Not sure on which period I will really focus on yet. I just don't get what the vgp, and S and NR numbers are - I could guess but I'd probably be wrong.. Thanks for the welcome and the support already! J
Okay, right, so they are reference material pointers not just descriptors of the coin itself! That makes a bit more sense. Thank you, I would have never, ever figured that out. J
I agree with the vgl (vergleich) being German for "comparing with" but would suggest that Nr. 9 could also stand for Nummer (number) 9. S could also stand for Seite (page), so it would be "compare to page 46 number 9".
Be C sure yo ask away but post photos when possible. Both sides and full size please. The only dumb question is the one not asked.
