I'm actually on the "hunt" for a new Constantine. When I say hunt I mean clobber a wounded coin that comes past.

Here's one of my first ancients:
    Constantine I, AD 306-337
    AE, 2.5g, 18mm; 6h; Ticinum, AD 320-321
Obv.: CONSTAN-TI MAX AVG; laureate head right
Rev.: DN CONSTANTINI MAX AVG; Within wreath with dot in badge at top: VOT / (dot) / X X / (crescent)
    In Ex.: ST

Constantine is one of the most interesting emperors and one of only two to have the title "FIL AVG" ("FIL AVGG") ("son of the Augusti") on coins in his name:
    Fig24o.jpg Fig24r.jpg
This type from Antioch has the title on both sides of the coin.
    24 mm.
Struck c. early to later 309 at Antioch
FL VAL CONSTANTINVS FIL AVG [only one G]
    GENIO FIL AVGG [two Gs]
This is the only variety mentioning FIL AVGG on the reverse.
For more about the reason for the title and its occasion, see the site:

Thanks for the Welcome and, of course, to everyone else that liked my post.
It was @lordmarcovan who instigated this purchase and I am looking forward to learning more about ancients and hopefully adding some more as well.

Doug, I'm glad you've made it over here. I only recently made the transition and started posting here myself, though I created this account nine years back!

It's way nicer than CU here, though I have a soft spot for CU after 15 years there. As you have no doubt discovered, the platform here is light years beyond the last wretched CU "upgrade".

CT members: @dadams won the Numismatic Gladiator championship on Collectors Universe with that Constantine he bought. Numismatic Gladiator is an ongoing "cheap coin challenge", and @Aethelred and I started it as a fun way to see who could get the most "bang for their buck". He and I have been discussing moving the NG franchise over here to CoinTalk, and since dadams is our reigning champion, I will solicit his opinion on that. I'm afraid the old CU forums are just gradually drying up.

Y'all have a peek at the history of the Numismatic Gladiator games and tell me what you think. We might do Cycle 2 of the games over here instead of there.

Lord M, I think you'll get more eyeballs and responses if you start a new thread on this topic (sometimes threads don't get read this deep in, and I imagine some may have skipped this one altogether to begin with).

I really like the idea behind the challenge because it's exactly what I've always believed about this hobby. However, I don't know if I'll get to participate often as I'm ethically against my paying a $10 (and often it's more) international postal fee on a $20 coin :D.

That said, sometimes I still can't help myself. A recent purchase was a $2.60 Claudius II ant (shipping from Europe was $8, which it shared with another cheap coin). However, I guarantee it will not be winning any of your challenges!

Yep, I'll announce Numismatic Gladiator in its own thread once the decision to move it here is final. There will be an index thread like the one I linked to over on CU.

Oh, those will definitely need their own threads :). I was referring to your asking for opinions on moving your Numismatic Gladiator games here... I think you'll get more members reading and responding on a separate thread rather than this one.
