New member, been reading some chats. Thought I'd get some input. I got a 20th Anniv. silver eagle set. Is this a keeper, or should I sell it for what I can, and invest towards maybe a 09-S VDB to finish my wheat set?
A profound question, and one that has no definative answer. If you believe that long term, the 20th anniversary set is going to increase in value by a relatively large amount over the next 10 years, then it may be a good idea to hold it, but if you think that long term it will remain relatively the same, then it becomes a better idea to buy the 09-S VDB. IMHO the key-date is assured to steadily increase over time. In my opinion, these are the two schools of thought. See which one you fall into and act accordingly. Maybe you're like me and you just aren't sure. That's why I am glad that I would be happy with either.
The amazing thing about the anniversary sets is the huge 'value' increase in less than a year .. issued for $100.. trading for average $600 now. We have all been raised with the advice 'buy low, sell high' yet most people are of the mindset 'gee, look how high it's getting, better buy it now before it gets higher' ... so the price has gone up even faster ... due to the people wading in when it hit $400 or so ... and the past month has dropped twice. I believe it will soon sit along side the 96 prestige or 99 silver proof set .. very high price out of the hands of the average collector. Ok.. having said all that .. I do believe they will settle around $700 by Christmas .. and will slowly increase over the years simply due to limited mintage. So deciding 'keep or sell' would be a matter of weighing your initial investment portion against the profit or loss you'd make/take now if selling .. and planning to immediately invest it all into the best 'next coin' you can buy. I do feel sorry for the true collector who simply ordered and bought the set for the beauty of the coin, the opportunity of owning the first US produced reverse proof, and keeping their Eagle set complete. I can imagine the pressure to 'sell' right now is high ... and that is the bad part. Hopefully those collectors will be able to redirect their attention back to the heart of the hobby rather than being wrapped up in the 'speculation'.
I bought the set from the mint. And you are right it IS a beautiful set. However with the present value, a 1909-S VDB is now in sight. With what happened with the Marine Dollar, to me modern Mint products are ify.I kinda feel , especially in 2009 I'll be happier with a Wheatie.
Well.. sounds as if you've already made up your mind then and if you were originally a penny collector & the anniversary set was just 'order it and see where it goes' then you bought as a speculator, not a collector, so it's a non issue. So yes, with the sets trading now for $600 average the 09SVDB is in 'sight' .. but only in a 'good' - unless you have 3 sets you're pretty far off from anything mint state. Nonetheless it puts you closer than you were so that's a good thing. I am holding onto mine... I want to continue to be one of the few people to own the raw set. Oh .. btw .. I have the 09SVDB ... in a 58 ~ and I'm excited to see what happens in 2009 too... I understand there are going to be 4 different releases that year?
The Marine Dollars were selling for $80 right after there release in 2005, now an unslabbed MS goes for$45 and a PROOF for $55. By the way a AU 58 09-S sounds great. I'm hoping to get a FINE+. Your right , I'm a "PENNY" collector, not my coins, my budget. Not only are there 4 different circulting pennies planned, also 2 COMMENS.
Your right , I'm a "PENNY" collector, not my coins, my budget. [/quote] Hey .. every denomination has years or mints that are beyond the average budget - I have the 09SVDB purely through some trading like you ~ traded off the 'speculator' stuff that worked... but I dont have the 1856 (sigh) or even the 1877 .... not yet anyway.... I honestly wonder if I'd enjoy this as much if I could just 'get whatever I wanted' rather than waiting for the 'good deal, great find'. Then again.. I'd like to have the budget to find out ~ test my theory (grin). Happy collecting!
