I have my doubts about this one. These are the only photos available. Thanks!

you might want to request a move to the ancients section.... they will help, they just dont venture out of there much. @lordmarcovan can help if he's around...

    Nice coin.
You may also check on wildwinds and coinarchives sites.
I started collecting ancient Greek and Roman coins a few years ago. Those are good resources.

This looks like the "Ostia" type, which would be a rare and highly desirable coin.

    IF it was real.

Trouble is, your particular example there is mushy and suspicious-looking to me, and considering the high value it would have if real, that makes it all the more suspect. I wouldn't get your hopes too high. I think your suspicions are well-founded.

Here's one that sold for $24,500 on CNG!

Now, since I personally know nothing beyond having been able to identify the basic type, I'll move this thread to Ancients forum, as suggested, where those more experienced can weigh in on it.

PS- sorry, I didn't see this back on March 20th when @cwart tagged me. I've been mostly absent lately.

PPS- it would be totally awesome if this turned out to be a genuine Ostia sestertius that just got that weird appearance as a result of some overzealous smoothing. But as I suggested... don't hold your breath.
