Does this seem genuine?

  1. Recently picked this up for a decent deal and it seems legit. Just looking for second opinions.

I may be wrong... but no it doesn't look real. Even without the weight and diameter.

It appears this coin was either sold several times on ebay, or relisted at least.

With respect, in connection with the other coin you recently asked about... if this coin doesn't raise doubts at a glance, you might want to consider buying from more reputable sources instead.

It's a fake that's been posted on EBay for some time. Details are too mushy although the coin has been very convincingly distressed to look genuine.

Coins of Taras / Tarentum are one of my main areas of collecting, and I have translated the series of Alberto D'Andrea's books on Tarentine coinage into English (a fourth should be out soon). The "Horsemen" series of nomoi / staters is very popular and has received a lot of attention, so it's not surprising that a few fakes are starting to show up. Unfortunately, genuine specimens remain expensive.
