This coin proves that the New Orleans Mint was drying their dollar Planchets with sawdust. One of the tan colored flakes is next to the neck above the star. Anyone have a 1904-P Morgan or 1904-S Morgan with sawdust still attached?
Wasn't this already "proved" by RWB? The Sawdust was basswood, and a special circular saw for producing basswood "dust" was in Philadelphia Mint. The sawdust was shipped by Phil to NO Mint (and other Mints). There are Mint letters attesting to same. Truth in editing: added a "i" and a ")"where appropriate.
That's awesome. Reminds me of some of the NFL coaches talking about "chopping wood", if anyone remembers that line. Beautiful coin by the way.
Ground up tree lumber, I guess. Read my OP. Yes. These flakes are all over the coin. In this day and age, most coins that had particles of sawdust on them have been cleaned and the flakes are removed. This leaves a dull depression in the surface where the sawdust was. This is what the very tiny "white" spots on the surface under the flake are. I've seen coin with bigger flakes on coins all the way down to tiny pits made by the wood dust.
