Id say that's a good price if that coin grades MS63+.

Tuff to tell from those pics but I wouldn't gamble a straight grade on it

The coin is an AU - not even close to MS-60. CDN bid is $60. You will not be able to buy it for that as proven by 61 bidders and $200+. The winner of the auction needs to try to sell it and they will get a quick education about grading and value. Since it jumps to $900 in Unc people chase the AU's and dealers push the price up on the other end.

An 86-O?? Call me crazy, but I'd say one needn't reach such a grade level to be a "good price" or worth what this ended at. That said, this isn't a comment on the coin in question, but only the above.

I might have paid that if it had an extra E on the reverse.

Would have made Leroys day lol

I'm still bouncing back and forth on those with one of my examples. Here's my spreadsheet notes for a non 57-A. (which I also have)

    1883 O MS63 V11 - 11 or 57?

I think Nate commented on it once. I'll have to research it.

    (1883-O if anyone is wondering)

I agree. With this very specific amount.

The overabundance of this mentality is why I have abandoned the US coin market. That, and gradeflation and the TPG label being the sole determinant of value to most collectors. And outrageous prices for "rare" coins that are actually common.

It's most apparent with Condition Rarities like this one - which, by the way, @DysfunctionalVeteran, is a $2500+ coin in MS63 - which aren't so rare in circulated condition. The price for higher AU's goes up whether they're rare or not, just because they're close to that Mint State specimen which most can't afford.

1886-O has a higher Population in PCGS AU58 than all but 4 other Morgan issues....

Whoever bought this one is gonna be rather disappointed if they get it graded. I've the feeling someone willing to do the legwork will find it relisted, raw (and deceptively imaged), down the road under the username of one of the major hype-sellers, though.

I have a very difficult time believing it toned under natural conditions, but it's still a nicer coin than the one first linked. Much better deal, excepting the fact that (opinion) circulated 1886-O's aren't worth reaching for.

Seemed like it was a bit too cheap for as the seller claimed, a "choice BU" coin...
