Hi! Thank you all for your help - I am learning a ton from this forum. I need some more feedback/help. I recently picked up this 1928 S SLQ. The flip it came in says VG but I think it is an F12. The buttons on the shield are too worn and the feathers on the reverse do not make it grade any higher. What does everyone think of this assessment? Am I getting anywhere in the ballpark or am I being too generous (remember - I am trying to learn)? What I am most interested in is the mintmark. I do NOT think it is an FS 501 (Inverted MM) nor the 502 (an RPM). I DO think it is a larger mint mark than is normal but it is hard to find examples online to compare it to. The red book mentions the variety but doesn't show photos of it. What say you? Are my assessments reasonable? Does this look like a large mint mark? See the images below.
Variety 2, VG-8-10 but not F-12. The mint mark is not unique, and the coin's high points are worn. Otherwise, nice coin. Keep it, thanks for sharing.
The Lincoln Wheat cent had two mintmarks in 1928. Large and small. https://www.lincolncentresource.com/San_Fransisco_Mintmark_Styles.html
60-75% of rim remains, both sides, so VG10 is a fair grade. I don’t think the mint mark is larger than normal, just worn enough to broaden (flatten) and look like it is larger. Although wear is severe it still has a very nice eye appeal…imo…Spark
CORRECTION. I compared the 1917-S to the 1928-S. This is definitely a Large S. It is MMS-003, per the link supplied by @alurid . @croesus_amok
Definitely a large S. Here is a better reference. http://varietyvista.com/08 Standing Liberty Quarters/San Francisco Mintmark Styles.htm
