Here is a Tetradrachm of Rhegium I picked up the Summer FUN show. I sent it off to David Sear for peace of mind. David gave it the thumbs up and called it a "good example of this powerfully rendered type". It has a slightly blobby appearance which David also said was normal for very high relief issues. This coin is the highest relief I have by far. Both sides are very high relief, but the lion is just ridiculous. Most people are drawn to it more than any other ancient I have I think because it is so 3d. I am trying to get a good picture that shows this aspect of it off well but depth of field is always lacking. Bruttium, Rhegium, AR Tetradrachm circa 415/410-387 BC 17.12 gm, 22.6 mm. Obverse: Lion’s scalp facing Reverse: Rhegion before laureate head of Apollo right, olive branch behind. Herzfelder 102 (D60/R87) citing 5 specimens from this die combination, BMC Italy p.375, 25, Sear 501. Post your coins of Rhegium. John
Wow, John! Very tough coin. I specialize in Magna Graecia tetradrachms and I don't have one of those. Superb pickup!
That's simply a fantastic tet!! I'd LOVE to add one to my collection!! That lion scalp obverse is utterly mesmerizing!!!
Thanks everyone. I have wanted one of these for a long time. I am going to try my cell phone for the side shot. Using my 35mm is not working well.
Sweet!! => now that's a cool coin (Theodosius, congrats on posting a real winner) I happen to have a humble example from Bruttium ... wanna see it? BRUTTIUM, Rhegion. AR Litra Circa 445-435 BC Diameter: 13 mm Weight: 0.71 grams Obverse: Facing lion’s scalp Reverse: RECI within wreath Reference: Herzfelder p. 89, B; HN Italy 2485 Other: 3h … VF, toned, some porosity From the collection of a Southern Pathologist. Ex Antioch Associates 34 (2001), lot 11 They're quite gorgeous "together" .... ummm, secret Santa?
Bummer, Steve, I already got you a 2-4 of Molson Ex for Christmas this year! That is a nice coin, though. Look at how the ears are rendered on your earlier example compared to my coin which was minted later.
Here are some cell phone side shots. I think some of these turned out pretty cool. I did finally find a copy of Herzfelder.
Here are a few more, totally gratuitous pictures. This photo is very close to what it looks like in real life, sitting in front of you. Paired with what would normally be called a "high relief" coin, the lion administers a relief smack down. Group shot with some other coins. Hope you enjoyed these. John
A fun Friday night for me! There is a huge thunderstorm going on, so sitting inside playing coins is very cozy.
