I love going to coin shows. Typically there are between 2-4 ancients dealers at each show. It also tends to be the same dealers at each show I go to. I still like to go and look and I have always made at least one purchase. However, my strategy now is to give a list of coins I am looking for to the dealers and they send me email when they have a lead. They can send the coin after I pay by paypal or I can arrange to pick up the coin at the next show. I cannot stress this enough. Making the time to build relationships with reliable dealers is the best investment a collector can make.
When I went to the Long Beach show I asked an ancients dealer about some Roman Republic coins and his response was "Do you know much about Roman Republic coins? Let me tell you..." 10 minutes of interesting information.
I enjoy hunting for my own coins => that really is 95% of the fun part (the other 5% percent is rolling around on the bed with them!!) ... yah, I love searching through auctions and comparing old auction prices (oh, and then seeing if there are any available examples on vcoins, etc) The thrill of the fricken hunt is what excites this guy!!
Been to a few, but not as many as a lot of folks here. You are correct... You MUST stifle yourself! The last one I was at had an incredibly "scarce" RR denarius... Still contemplaing... And yeah, it would be an "IRA investment" to acquire...
I used to do that too! LOL! I mean empty the bag on the bed when I returned from my afternoon of hunting for coins. Back in the early days, I use to buy old military medals at gun shows and flea markets.
