Just wondering about everybody's thought on this one. Were there a lot of counterfeit non VDB's or is it a safer bet to assume it's genuine?
Any key date should be authenticated, either by you (if able), or a reputable TPG company. Your photos are unusable for authentication. You'll need clear, in-focus, full frame photos of the coin straight on in order to see the kind of details needed to say if the coin is fake or genuine.
Ya that's just what I had to go on. I bought it so we'll see how it goes on Saturday. The seller seems like a good guy so I'm not too worried. I just looked for some info and saw a lot of vdb articles on detection but I guess it would be about the same as far as fake mint marks and such. I'll post up better pictures when it arrives.
In that case, the first step in authenticating the coin is assessing your trust in the seller. I know people I will buy from sight unseen and no questions asked. Others... not so much. If the seller offers an unconditional guarantee of authenticity, you can buy with much more confidence than if not.
Take straight on (coin flat & not tilted) FOCUSED photo of the obverse. The coin looks 100% fake in Your OP. Don't buy raw coins.
As mentioned the images aren't good enough to authenticate for sure, but the rims on the reverse look very weak and rounded for a 1909 of any variety in that grade. So I would say it is questionable.
Depends a lot on what you paid for it... However there are some pretty good people here about telling geese from ducks. Look forward to pics.
Pictures that are: 1) at an angle - are useless 2) not focused-- are useless 3) in a 2x2 holder --are useless
I actually had a trade lined up on arrival for the toned Morgan I posted on here last week but I messaged him to not even send it because it'll probably come straight back if it's a fake. I asked because after the excitement over such a find I realized it looks way too nice for his asking price of $125
It is a FAKE!. Look at the left wheat. The bump on the inside middle is a known indicator of Chinese coins.
Thank you and great eye. I cancelled the transaction before it was shipped to avoid the hassle once I got it to notice. See that's valuable info I hope for. Now I know exactly WHY it's fake and not just"it's fake, move along". Which is helpful too but at least I learned what to look for because of this comment. Much appreciated guys thanks for saving me the money and time
That bump on the left wheat is a dead give away, I have seen other years faked with the same flaw on reverse.
Agree with RLM, that die chip is a give away to a fake. The pictures are HORRIBLE, no way I'd buy a key date with such pictures.
