Even "milled" coins have minting flaws. I do not like when coins were later scratched/ graffitti/ cleaned/ polished/ dipped.....

Yes, and I especially hate it when they drill holes in them to use them as jewellery. :vomit:

Don't even mention those idiots that deface beautifull coins like that. Also those ninkompoops that etch value on large gold coins. Seen a gorgeous Salzburg AV 20 Dukaten/ "XX" was etched on reverse.

An unexpected opportunity came up today, the seller I bought my Abbasid and Umayyad Gold Dinars from has offered to sell me the gold coins he doesn't have listed on eBay, so he sent me a list and I found several interesting gold coins on it, such as a Gold Sultani of Suleiman I for example, he will send me the pictures of the gold coins I expressed an interest in on Tuesday, and if at least one of them is to my liking, then maybe we can reach a deal. :)

I have no idea, I asked to see the picture of only the Fatimids Gold Dinar 1,6g Messina Palermo Au Robai one, and he will send me a picture of it on Tuesday.

Here is the Sicilian gold dinar he has for sale on eBay: https://www.ebay.com/itm/2352648213...VP8AXH&hash=item36c6e0483e:g:B1MAAOSwSA9leurh

Send him a message on eBay and ask him if he has them in better quality than the one currently listed is.

Also, be aware that he is one of the sellers whose coins look better in person than in the pictures on the listing.

I would not buy it/ very poor quality. Better to spend more and get a coin that looks beautifull. Roma auction has some nice aurei. This coin/ you can get fot god price in MS. I got this one for 7000US. IMG_0687.JPG IMG_0688.JPG

Well, even if it was in good condition, I wouldn't buy it now, there are probably at least 15 gold coins I plan on buying before seriously considering buying a Roman Gold Aureus of Trajan.

Thanks, yes, the inflated grades are one of the things that make me suspicious.

Since you have won coins at Aureo & Calicó auctions, I have a question, from what I understand from reading their terms, if your winning bid is under their estimate, the purchase order gets cancelled and you don't get the coin?!?

OK/ with all auctions/ they have a "starting" or opening bid.
So/ if starting bid is 1500 euros/ your bid will have to be 1500. If you place a proxy bid of 2500 and second highest bid is 1800/ then you would win coin at 1900e. However, if your proxybid is leading on day of auction/ and during auction the bid vs you is 1800/ then your bid wins coin at 1800. Auction houses will award you coin/ if your bid is highest. K & M Numismatics had an auction/ I later looked at unsold lots. A AV Tanka of Madura MS-63 was unsold at 5000US/ opening bid. So I contacted him that I wanted to buy it. He wrote back to me and said I would be able to buy it for 9500US. I then wrote to him that he made an error. Turned out there was a reserve of 9500 on coin. I then wondered why opening bid was not 9500US????????

The vendor sets the reserve which can be anything. However, the auctioneer may start at whatever level he feels is appropriate to get some competitive bidding as some reserves are too optimistic to open at that level. Start the bidding too high and you might not get a bid. In the case of the above, it was unsold at $5K opening bid which is a reflection of where the market thinks it was rather than the rose tinted spectacles of the vendor.

I don't know what the rules are on that side of the pond, but in the UK, the reserve can't be higher than top estimate. So if I want £2K for my £1K coin, the estimate would probably be 1500-2000 and it wouldn't receive any bids.

Yes, that is what I don't get, if a coin has a "reserve" price, why not just put that as the required starting bid? My maximum bid for the Caliphate of Cordoba Gold Dinar of Abd al-Rahman III is 3500 EUR, while their estimate for the coin is 4000 EUR, so I guess I won't be buying it from them after all.
