I was curious and bid liberally on three different 1927 (P) Peace Dollars in CACG MS63 holders a month ago. These were fresh certifications and not legacy re-holders (which I was ignorant of at the time). I won all three and the average hammer price was $294 so they were not really out of line with other quality MS63's in my opinion. I think hobbyists are approaching these similarly to quality specimens in PCGS or NGC holders. The holders are built like a tanks though. I like the durability and the way they stack but hate they don't fit in standard PCGS boxes. If you force the issue, the PCGS box will lose.
Do they fit in NGC boxes? PCGS has always been "holder specific" with their boxes. You could put NGC coins in them, but they never fit very well.
Agreed. Time for me to buy another intercept box that fits them all. Sort of, but the CAC holder will only go about 80% of the way down the slot.
Haven’t found any CAC only holders that have coins that I have been looking for but did find my latest with a CAC sticker.
Not yet...I would be VERY wary about buying a coin now with CACG except for the novelty of it....the premiums are very high since supply is limited. A year from now....with no change in the price/grade of the underlying coin....the item will cost less.
Interesting, that I saw a dealer selling the exact same coins and same grades but CACG version was $25 more than the PCGS version, and I wondered why or how many they will sell at CACG pricing. Both were modern day MS 70 coins, maybe the grading cost is that much more? Haven't purchased any yet either, but called them about a week ago to get pricing for stickering. If approved you pay the same wheter stickered or not. Their fee for sticker consideration is $65 or so plus about $30 or $35 more for return shipping. Then you cross your fingers and hope for the green bean.
They stickered "undergraded" coins, or more accurately, coins that were "strong" for the grade. The goal -- see the 2008 interview -- was to weed out the "C" coins.
I have not found anything I really need and have not spent much time looking at prices. I thought about sending them a group of IHC proofs and Lincoln matte proofs but changed my mind. There has been a lot of talk about how tough they are on these. Instead, I just sent them in for the CAC sticker and not take the risk.
They can make more money charging for rejects thereby making their own more valuable. They simply ( in their basement) can slab their own, friends or important associates. I’m seeing cheap detailed CACG slabs all over the place.
I know what there business model is. There are plenty of coins that get a sticker that are over graded by at least a point or 2, some IMO 3-4 grades. MS63-4 is the new AU58.
Well, early returns are that CACG is labeling some previously-graded MS coins in the AU bucket. Big question is if any CAC Sticker coins that had an MS from PCGS or NGC were really AU (had wear/friction on high points) and will legacy cross. Apparently....yes.
