Thinking about buying this 1934 D. It looks to be uncirculated but I noticed some faint scratches on the front that look like someone has cleaned it in the past. Any thoughts?
Is the Mint Mark location at the top of the ray an indication of any other Vams or is it just a marker for the DDO ?
I'm looking on HA and remember reading that the Micro D isn't rare but the location had some involvement as most of them are placed lower toward the rim
No it's only $60 which was why I wondered. Peace Dollars and Buffalo nickels are completely out of my league on grade but I didn't notice any wear or marks on the rim or eagles feathers, so I assumed it was cleaned before circulated. Makes sense on price now though thanks guys.
Jim ya need to realize that coins can get scratches like that without them having been harshly cleaned. I really don't know a good way to explain it you about how tell the difference other than to say it's a "look" kind of thing. Coins that have been harshly cleaned have a certain look, and coins that just have some scratches and hairlines on them also have a certain look. But those two "looks" are quite different. And the only way I know of to tell one from the other is experience. Once you've looked at thousands and thousands of them, you KNOW what the two different looks are. With enough experience you even get to where you will recognize, at a glance, when a coin has merely been wiped. And make no mistake here, a coin that has been wiped is still a coin that has been harshly cleaned. But only to the least degree.
