This one set me back a bit but I was given a four months to pay for it. J-1293 Silver Trade Dollar pattern R-4, PR-61.
Good for you! I do that a lot when seeing a coin I really want. Got a few from Ma-shops that way. John
I could not afford it outright so traded for the Paget 1926 Great Britain patterns for the upcoming six silver denominations, including the Peace Crown, but this has been some years now and couldn't for Love or Money get such coins.
I only have 1 dated medieval coin, the Umayyad Gold Dinar of al-Walid I, one of the things it says on the reverse of the coin is ""In the Name of Allah this dinar was struck in the year six and ninety". Umayyad Gold Dinar of al-Walid I:
Nice one I have same coin type! Oh....if you counted early dated Islamic coins/ then I have over 300 for sure/ but only 8 Christian dated ones before 1500.
I know next to nothing about Indian coinage but would like to know more. Your coin looks beautiful by the way. What is the size & rarity? Are they all this expensive? Are there any good books covering these? ================================================= -- from wiki: Kanishka I , Kanishka or Kanishka the Great[5] was an emperor of the Kushan dynasty, under whose reign (c. 127–150 CE) the empire reached its zenith.[6] He is famous for his military, political, and spiritual achievements. A descendant of Kujula Kadphises, founder of the Kushan empire, Kanishka came to rule an empire extending from Central Asia and Gandhara to Pataliputra on the Gangetic plain. The main capital of his empire was located at Puruṣapura (Peshawar) in Gandhara, with another major capital at Mathura. Coins of Kanishka were found in Tripuri (present-day Jabalpur).[7] Although he never converted to the religion, his conquests and patronage of Buddhism played an important role in the development of the Silk Road, and in the transmission of Mahayana Buddhism from Gandhara across the Karakoram range to China. Around 127 CE, he replaced Greek with Bactrian as the official language of administration in the empire.
"Only 8 Christian ones dated before 1500 " (almost like a US collector saying I have ONLY 14 1804 silver dollars...)
Thank you. If by "size" you mean weight, it should weigh about 8 grams, and yes, it is rare in this good of a condition. No, you can buy Kushan gold dinars for under 1000 USD on VCoins. This book will come out in a little less than 5 months: https://www.amazon.com/Kushan-Coins-catalogue-Kushano-Sasanian-centuries/dp/0861591917 This is probably the best book on Kushan coins currently on the market: https://www.amazon.com/Kushan-Kushano-Sasanian-Kidarite-Coins-Collections/dp/0897223349/ref=sr_1_2?crid=3DPCXIBNYUWFZ&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.k9xdkTc0drfFFeFGkkAb3cnQZ-wTuyL58w4ZXZxaD2E.PR-tSlOdS7-jVP5FdFeOKUvMNiuTi0jRx8kYJopmlbs&dib_tag=se&keywords=Kushan,+Kushano-Sasanian,+and+Kidarite+Coins&qid=1709251416&s=books&sprefix=kushan,+kushano-sasanian,+and+kidarite+coins,stripbooks-intl-ship,283&sr=1-2
You can buy a Kushan Empire gold dinar of Shaka for 750 GBP here: https://www.vcoins.com/en/stores/so..._empire_shaka_gold_dinar/1971032/Default.aspx
Thanks, I'll look for the book. I might be going to the British museum again but in less than 5 months. One can view their collection online but sorting it & connecting with the history requires a book like this. On the L. 750 gold dinar, I might try to research for a more significant item. Some of my more expensive coins which I bought some time ago. Chile, 8 Escudos, 1832, NGC-64, ex-Eliasberg Chile, 8 Escudos, 1819, NGC- 64 same type but different variety with 'lumpy volcanoes'. Argentina, 8 soles or 8 escudos?, 1836 generally believed to be a die trial for the gold 8 escudos This is an AU-details grade but still quite rare and more expensive than either of the above 8 E's.
You can buy the book here: https://www.numislit.com/pages/book...talogue-of-coins-from-the-american-numismatic There are various "more significant (and thus more expensive)" Kushan Empire Gold Dinars that can be bought on this website: https://www.oxusauctions.com/store/Coins-c126471208
