A nice coin for a first purchase. Hope this is not a one time thing. :)

A small point to note if you care about attribution numbers (honestly, not everyone does)... you'll notice that in the link Mikey provided for his example, the RIC number given is RIC II (Vespasian) 957, whereas what you have in yours is RIC 242. The number you've used is for the earlier edition of RIC that covers this period, which has since been superseded a new edition that was published in 2007, so the numbers have changed. The link also shows the correct obverse legend - CAESAR AVG F DOMITIANVS.

Anyway, nice choice for a first ancient! I like the reverse type and have one similar that was issued some years earlier, but with an anepigraphic reverse.

You are off to a very good start and trying to ID coins, totally awesome!!

Roman Imperial coinage is one of the easiest to attribute and learn, generally speaking. Good place to start.

No, but I do collect Civil War stuff. Only have a few Confederate notes, add them when I find good ones.

One of the reasons some of us post here is to spread the word that there are interesting things available to those who care to look. I was mostly a Roman collector for years but them started looking at cheaper Greeks. That was followed by non-Classical (Indian etc.) and medievals. There are literally thousands of thousands of choices without even getting into the super rare things that 'belong' in museums. I'm glad you found happiness in two Romans and hope you will follow your nose to many more of the same and different opportunities. Your two coins are separated in time by nearly 300 years but you could get something at least 600 years older or newer without leaving our little range of choices. Welcome aboard.

The good thing about ancients is that if you get bored with Roman Imperial, you can always move to Roman Republican, or the massive world of Greek coinage, or Celtic, or Parthian, or Sassanian, or ancient Indian/Asian, Indo-Greek, etc.

And if you want to shake things up some more, move to medieval which is another massive world on its own.

You'll never find this much variety in American coinage.

Nice first ancient. Don't think of it as foreign, think of them as the invention of the money we use today. :D
